How many miles between oil change?

96 Maxima 184,600 miles, I just started change oil myself, I use Mobil 1 5W-30 full synthetic oil for cars over 75,000 miles, how many miles between oil change? Last time I change was about 6,000 miles ago, oil is really dirty and dark, I wonder if it is too many miles?

Just to be on the safe side if I used dino oil i would change it 3k and if it was synthetic i would change at 6k.

But YMMV and people can argue all day when to change out the oil lol. My new car lets me know when its time to change oil which is anywhere between 5k-10k.

My 5.5 burns so much oil I have to add 4-5 quarts between 3000 mile changes. On a side note, good pick with the Mobile-1. I work in the field of automation maintenance (Youtube HK 4000 to get an idea) and our facility was visited by a Tribologist. One of the guys asked him which motor oil was the best and he said mobile one high mileage, because it has over 35% additives to protect your engine, the highest in the industry for non-industrial, consumer motor oil.

Lots of cool stuff.

Mobile one is good for 10,000 miles. Dino is good for 7K. That said, I run Supertech for 3-4K.

There is a man on bobistheoilguy who ran Supertech dino oil in a caravan for 10K and sent in a sample. The oil was still good, and there was minimal engine wear evident.

If your not willing to go at least 7-8K then don't waste your money on Mobil.

As a rule that I've always been taught change your oil every 5000km's. I often go beyond this and never have any problems.
As a side note about synrhetic oils...it has always been my understanding that if you buy a car that has or have switched to synthetic then you should never use anything but synthetic. I'm not sure why this is but I have always been told this.

I am asking because I saw on BMW forums some people followed BMW recommended 15,000 miles oil change interval with synthetic oil, they have nasty sludge build-up in the engine so I would think 7,000miles interval should be fine with synthetic oil.

I'm sorry but I wouldn't be able to deal with that. 5 quarts after 3000 miles? That is ridiculous. I would either have my motor rebuilt or replaced if it was burning that much oil.

I usually use conventional oil and go to jiffy lube for their $22 oil change. My car has 251,000 miles and they use 5w30 and some off brand filter, they dont flush it, just add new oil. I think next time Im gonna change my own oil and put a k & N filter on.

I have 220,000 miles. I drive mostly highway, and change around every 6,000 miles, though I have lost track a few times and hit 7-9k.

Car is still running fine.

Right now I change at about 2k. I'm trying to clean up the insides tho. Normally I go for 3-4k regardless if its synthetic or not. Oil may be good for more but that doesn't mean the filter is still doing it's job. Imo

i had a $9.00 oil change at the dealer and they always put 3,500 for some reason. i never go beyond 2,500 cause my vq leaks at the timing cover and the mileage is high. 5w-30 mobil 1.

It truly doesn't matter.

All/most oils we can purchase off the shelf nowadays are pretty much the same ... Just pick a brand you decide you like.

Sticking with the manufacturer recommended viscosity is usually a safe bet. But you can adjust that too based on your car's liking. Listen to it and watch it ... It'll tell you.

Simply keep it changed regularly and on time, install a quality filter and you'll be good to go.

BTW, I use a 10W40 or 5W40.

Any major brands specs will exceed our 17 year old cars requirements. Even Walmart Supertech is better than required. Use whatever you can the best price on.

And use 5w30 or 10w40 in climates that reach 100*+

i go 6500ish on my daily driver and add some as needed (it consumes oil). i change it basically every fall and spring and drive it about 13000-14000 mpy.

the good car depends on lots of things.

Depends on the oil + filter type, your driving style, hwy or city driving, etc. That being said, 6K miles should be fine with a quality synthetic like M1. I did 4K mile conventional oil changes before recently switching over to synthetic. I'm going to run it for 6-6.5K miles and have a UOA done. Nissan engines are hard on oil so don't cheap out on your engine's lifeblood. Always use a quality filter as well and not that quick lube garbage.
