Tire Suggestions

Hey Everyone,

These goodyear RS-A's are horrific. I have 20k on the car and they have worn like crap after my religious rotations, alignments and pressure checks. This winter is a doozy and I don't think it is anywhere near over. Does anyone have suggestions on some all season replacements? I used Falken Ziex 512 & 912 in my previous vehicles. I know they came out with a replacement for the 912. I was also thinking about Conti DWS. Any thoughts, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :-)

I lean to the Conti DWS based on reviews and driver reports, and I have heard good things about the Motivos, also.

But I haven't driven on those two recommended tires because my '09 was built in Sept 2008, and still has good rubber left on the OEM Goodyear RS-As after 5 1/2 years and 43K miles. I only rotate each 15K miles, and these tires have never needed balancing, nor has the car needed realignment. Rides smooth and straight at speeds I'm not supposed to post here.

Lt Leary posts here often, and I think he got around 70K miles on his OEM RS-As. Road conditions, type and style of driving play important roles in how long a tire lasts.

There are other good tire choices, but some can get rather pricey.

Light is correct and spot on regarding driving style. While he and I had/have long life out of the RSAs, their longevity, or any tire's longevity have a big correlation to the type of driving you do.

I got 72K out of my RSAs, 120K out of the first set of Michelin MXV4s (although they still had 4/32 it was starting rainy season in Florida!) and so far, 60K on my second set of MXV4s. But I am an "old lady" type of driver. I rarely exceed speed limits and corner and brake gently as well as doing primarily highway driving. I had some reservations on the Contis and Motivos re longevity as they are primarily "performance" tires and tend to wear "early!" Too be sure, they are great tires, but my priorities are just that, my priorities.

After ton's of research, I'm getting the DWS this spring. They seem to be the perfect combination of ride quality and handling ability. Lots of comments about how quiet and long lasting they are.

I live in the Midwest and will be swapping them out for the Blizzak's I've got on the stock rims for Nov-March each year. Those tires are unstoppable.

I had Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Plus installed last month and I have no regrets. I live in Ohio and they handled the recent 8 inches of snow wonderfully. I had to ditch the stock rsa's I was all over the road even when it rained.

My stock RSA tires lasted about 75k miles. They were ok, that about it.

I switched to the ContinDWS tires. Handling was not what I expected. They felt more numb than the RSAs, and did not hold center well. The tended to drift a bit when on center, due to the lack of feedback. Traction was good in dry and wet. I didn't get the chance to try then in snow before I traded my 09 for a 12 model.

I will look for other options when the time comes.

Michilen Pilot A/S Sport expensive but find them buy 3 get 1 and worth every penny. At 30k on them and the thread is less than 30% used!

I'm actually looking at the new Pilot Sport A/S 3's, and waiting for a special promo to drop.

The OEM Goodyears have 41K miles of mostly highway commuting miles with plenty of tread left.
I expect to replace them at about 50K miles with Michelin MXM4.....same as recently bought for the Jaguar.

I agree!
But I also find it a bit puzzling that the Goodyear RSA's only have a UTQA rating of 260 AA. You usually see that type of rating on max performance summer tires. Even the Conti DWS have a UTQG of 540 AA indicating a potential for higher mileage.
My stock RSA's @ 30K miles have at least another 15-20K of good tread left. Either I don't understand the use of this rating system or the tire Mfg's give any rating they prefer.

I've had Continental DWS on my Alti SE-R and just bought Falkens new tire 950 Ziex to replace my RS-As on the Max. The Falken is definitely a better tire in the snow than the DWS. It's also classified as an Ultra Performance tire. It's cheaper too I believe. Look them up. They have a special tread compound that changes as the temperature changes. Pretty cool stuff. They debuted at SEMA last year.

Looks like a pretty good tire but it's just too new for me. I couldn't really find any user reviews yet or independent tests results for that matter. Looks to be similar to the ZE912 compound but with a different tread design.

I really wanna get a set of these. I have had nothing but good luck with Falkens. Thanks for the user review :-) I think anything has to be better than the RS-A's. Do you have a pic of them mounted on the car?

When I lowered my car I never got an alignment which lead to much lower tread life. I'm just passing 24k miles and had a near blowout driving to work last week, a 3 inch piece of aluminum on the expressway went through the tread and into the inside of the sidewall. I was kind of impressed the stock tires held up so well, but I'd been wanting new tires for a little while and was looking at potenza 760 and a few other tires. Desperately needing tires I got a few quotes, ranging from 950-1100. I ended up calling a tire shop we work with for work and he said they had just ordered way too many Goodyear eagle gt's and he got me all 4 installed for 415. Needless to say for that price these tires are amazing. I like them better than the rsa and along with a well overdue alignment Maxine is hitting on ramps like a champ now. The tire tread pattern is mean looking on these too

They are discontinuing that tire which is why they are cheap. You'll find you won't get the life out if those tires either. And snow they'll be horrible. Had them on my Altima SE-R.
$415 is very cheap, great deal.

I had continental dws in a rear wheel clk500 and it handled the best out of all all season performance tires that I have owned. I needed a tire that could handle in the rain as rain or shine I had a lead foot. Van city rains a lot. I literally went through about 3 different brands a year testing how they performed in wet weather. I have yet to try nitto motivo though but I had nitto nt420s for suv and that performed awesome.

They aren't the most common but Vredestein Sessanta's have worked excellent especially in wet conditions.

I had the vredestein and in my opinion, didn't handle as good in rain as dws...

Another vote for Pilot Sport A/S 3. Best tire ever in the rain. Pretty good in all seasons.

At 36k I just replaced the RSA's with Hankook Ventus S1 noble2 Size: 245/45ZR18 installed by the Nissan Dealer (Dealer offered $200 off any 4 tires I bought). The reviews on tirerack indicated they were quite and had good traction is wet weather. They are definitely quieter than the RSA - a real pleasure!!! So far I have no complaints. My son had real problems with the DWS's on his Subaru and had to get Pilot Super Sports (they were great, but don't last long) - he's on his second set. I suspect the PilotSport A/S tires would be excellent also.

Huge difference between Continental DWS and Michelin Super Sports man.

Michelins new AS3 is supposed to be a great 3 season tire.
