belts and tension
Without specifics, here is the best I can do for you.
Get the Nissan service manual (FSM)
on-line here: http://boredmder.com/FSMs/Nissan/Maxima/
Click on your year of car and then click on MA.pdf. In the index, read down to ENGINE MAINTENANCE. Then click on "Checking drive belts".

Just changed my alternator on my 02. If you're not semi skilled with mechanical ability you could run into problems. For my year I would, if I was just changing the ac belt which runs alternator:
1: jack up car and secure.
2: remove passenger tire.
3: remove splash guards for bottom and side.
4: loosen tensioner nut and take tension off belt.
5: remove belt.
6: put new belt on and reverse process.
Just to clarify changing the belt is a much simpler process then say changing the alternator. If you had to change the alternator then you would need to loosen or even take bolts all the way out of ac compressor. You need too move it out of your way to be able to get alternator in and out. Also you need to take off the belt tensioner to access one bolt a little easier. Reassembly of the tensioner can be tricky if you don't pay attention. I'm sure some members on here will tell me I'm wrong about how I did it but that's the way I did it and it wasn't easy. So good luck and be patient.

+1 on above advice, spot on. All I will add is that in actuality it's not THAT difficult if you just take it step by step (lots of how-to's on the forum). My first time it probably took me 3 hours to do fumbling about, if I had to do it again I could knock an alternator change out in under 45 minutes EASY.

Thanks Manual Maxima the changing of the belt while not too difficult, if the person doing it doesn't have mechanical skills I could see maybe getting overwhelmed. I on the other hand did get a little frustrated changing out my alternator. There is very little room to work with and my bear claws made it difficult to maneuver. Having an extra set of hands would probably helped.
ok thanks guys i guess i was running in to probs because i put the compressor on before the alt. ok and next question behind the flywheel on a m/t 5 speed there is a next plate with a set of teeth i assume that's what the crank position sensor the bolts on to the tranny reads off correct if i am wrong anyone know the name of that. also i notice that about 4 of those teeth are bent...anyone know if they are suppose to be bent a little(more than likely not) and also could that cause a non start. thanks in advance
