Nissan to introduce 8 speed CVT to market

Have you guys seen this on FreshAlloy.com??

"We reported a while back about a rumor that Nissan’s new Skyline sedan would get the 3.5 liter VQ V-6 and an “8-speed” continuously variable transmission. England’s AutoExpress confirms the report by actually testing the Skyline “350 GT-8.” According to the publication, The 350 GT-8 will come with the same 280bhp engine powering the 350Z. The eight speed CVT, according to AutoExpress, “takes only 0.2 seconds to switch between ratios, so gear selection happens as fast as you can click your fingers.”

They also say that by combining the quick shifting 8 speed, 280bhp, RWD, “superb acceleration across the power band,” and a V-8 like exhaust note, the 350 GT-8 is a “driving enthusiast's delight.” No mention if this car will come to our shores, but it could be possible as a G35 variant. Word is that the 8-speed CVT is also being considered for the 350Z and future GT-R. Nissan's previous CVT had 6 artificial gears and fitted in the Japanese market Gloria and Cedric luxo-sport sedans."

Interesting.....

Isn't the whole point of CVT not to have "speeds"?

Yeah, I'm not sure why they want to have discrete gears. They could just have the CVT optimize itself for driving conditions.
One reason they may want "speeds" is that it gives the driver the ability to downshift before entering a turn. Getting more engine braking under certain situations (going downhill) would be a good option.

hmm 8 gears to shift through would seems kinda much and odd at first to get used to.
