Setting engine to TDC

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out the easiest/most accurate way to set the first piston to TDC so i can (re)set the timing on my 99 Maxima. From what I've seen online researching, the only accurate way to do it is taking the valve covers off and turning the pistons until the valves on the first piston are closed and it is at the top of the cylinder. How do I determine it is at the top of the cylinder short of sticking something long in the cylinder and stop turning the engine when it starts going back down? I've also seen using a compression gauge to determine when it is at TDC but i'm not sure how to go about this actually. Is there an easier method??

Currently, the engine is sitting with the timing cover off. Any issue with me turning the engine using the crankshaft pulley?

TIA!

Screw the compression gauge into cylinder #1. Rotate the engine until you see pressure start to build, then line up the TDC mark on the crank.
