Need immediate response........Check engine oil light

What's up? Hey I just put on my pop charger the other day & the very next day my check engine oil light came on. I am taking the car to Nissan tomorrow morning so they can tell me why the light is on. I just wanted to see if anyone knew why the light was on before I take it to Nissan. Please I need your help......Thanks

Do not go to the Nissan dealer asking why your aftermarket mods messed up your car. You are just asking for it. Is this your Check Engine Light or the Oil light? If it is the engine light pull the code and post it here. Most likely it is something very simple and can be solved without involving expensive dealerships. If your oil light did come on your intake probably had nothing to do with it, as they are really not related. If you do decide to go to the dealer put your stock intake back on or they might try and blame your problem on the pop charger.

The check engine light can come on for any number of reasons.

Pull the code and then tell us what it is first before going to the dealer.

Once I drove around with the CE light on for almost a month and no problems. And I've had it come on again just two weeks ago and so far no real problems (been too lazy to pull the code but I think I know what it is)

And you think the dealer will diagnose it for free? If it is under warranty (which it isn't due to your mod), then the diagnosis will be free. If not, they will charge standard labor to find out what is causing the DTC. Figure approx 30 minutes for the incompetent Nissan Tech to plug in the Consult tool, fiddle with the menus, and tell you what the trouble code is. You can pull the code yourself...read the sticky in the 4th gen forum. Don't pay the dealer for something you can easily do yourself.

Listen...you installed a POP charger and the next day your check engine light came on. Check your install. If it looks okay, go here http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html and pull the code. 99 times out of a 100 a C.E.L. coming on after an install means you missed something in your install. If you pull the code and still can't figure it out, post here and someone will help you.

BS. They can't void your warranty unless they can prove that the mod somehow broke something. Mind you, there are varying definitions of prove, but you are protected by federal law here.

That's the law, but in reality Eric's statements are exactly right. A simple forum search here of Nissan dealer experiences, ESPECIALLY with mods backs Eric's assertion up all day long.

Yeah I just put in an after market air filter and my check engine light came on. I have a 96 maxima and they have the air sensor. So people tell me to wait and the check engine light will go away in about 1 or 2 weeks. What do yall think about it???

Pull the code!

The CE light can come on for a whole bunch of reasons. Maybe it's something else totally unrelated with your air filter and it just happened to trigger it at the same time. You never know until you pull the code.

That may be true but try using excuse that at the Nissan dealer. I'm serious...even getting the dealer to fix something under warranty on an unmodified car is a nightmare. Good luck with a modified car. Just try that once and you will know what I mean..Nissan's dealer network, with the exception of a few, is horrible when it comes to warranty repairs.

You can bring up the topic of lawsuits, or call Nissan Consumer Affairs...it's not worth the aggravation in cases like these...better just to remove the mod and hope they buy your story.

You're right, it's just easier to remove the mod. And if this guy knew what he was doing, he might realize his mod is what's causing the "problem" in the first place. But when it comes up, the words "Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act" can get you some good service.

A word of advice: Pull the mods off your car and NEVER mod your car again. And take everything to the Nissan dealer to get repaired.

If you feel like learning something, use the search function and/or view the wonderful IMPORTANT titled posts at the top of this forum. You just might learn something.

The Magnusson-Moss Warranty act might be a valid argument if you used an aftermarket replacement part which was meant to directly replace a stock component (i.e. OEM equivalent). Such as replacing the Nissan oil filter with a FRAM filter. But when you start adding aftermarket performance components which alter the behavior of the car, it is a much more difficult argument at the dealership.

I bet dealership service departments rub their hands in anticipation (like Mr. Burns from the Simpsons) of naive customers bringing their modded cars looking for warranty service. It's a chance for them to gouge more customers.

Even then, the same law applies. They still have to show that the non-OEM part (whatever it may be) directly contributed to the problem.

True, and the customer with the modded Maxima may have a perfectly good explaination why their mods did not contribute to the problem. That's not the tough part, as we are reasonably knowledgable car people here. The tough part is getting the idiot service advisor to believe your story. You can be 100% correct, but remember this is probably the same dealership that says Maximas have 300hp and that you need to have an engine oil flush every 15k miles. It's not the mod's fault...it's the stupid dealership service people you need to deal with...and that's the migraine inducing component.

Ok it sucks but you increase your HP by 5-10. I don't have the money to buy a cold air intake first of all plus to get it installed? I guess some of us are just not spoiled like others. So the pop charger was worth it cause I used it on my previous Maxima & now this one. So what you gonna say now?
