Problem with rear brakes....please help...
Problem with rear brakes....please help...
Wassup guys...My problem is the rear brakes. They stick and make noise when i start driving after my car has been sitting overnight or even for like 5 min. it eventually goes away. I found out that the noice is coming from rear brakes and they are sticking to rotors(i think). The way i can tell this is when i pull on hand brake till 2 clicks, the noise goes away. Is there any way i can handle this myself or should i take it in to my mechanic....???
My 99's rear calipers are pretty much defective. Nissan should be hung out to dry for that crap. Mine have "groaned" at low speeds since new, particularly when wet. This is a sure sign of "sticky" calipers. Now, when going in reverse when pulling out of a parking spot, hitting the brakes emits a nice "boom" sound in the back from where the hydraulic pressure has to really build up to push the piston against the pad on the passenger side rear disc brake.
The only way to fix this is one of two things:
Rebuild the caliper(s)
Replace the caliper(s)
If you're a good mechanic, I would buy a rebuild kit from Nissan and do it right. Otherwise, I would bend over and buy maybe an aftermarket caliper and pay a mechanic to install it. But, buying a whole caliper is easier to deal with/install than trying to rebuild one. It's up to you. Check the sticky posts for rebuild caliper kit prices.

Think there is any chance I could get a dealer to look at the caliper and cover it under 3 yr/36,000? I'm about 3 months from passing that mark.
Re: Problem with rear brakes....please help...
My rears use to squeak A LOT. Thought it might be the pads, rotors or the shims being put on awkwardly so I changed my pads and got some slotted rotors. Sadly, I didn't have a C-clamp so I used whatever tools I had around and hammered the piston back in. Needless to say that was not smart. After basically forcing the calipers back on and taking my car for a test drive, I noticed a weird smell and some smoke coming from my rear wheels. Turns out my pistons were siezed and my rear brakes were permanently on. Anyway, long (embarassing) story short, I ended up replacing both calipers. Replacing them isn't difficult, didn't try rebuilding them. I paid ~$90/each for them with the cores from a local mechanic but I think you might be able to swing it for less if you go that route. Either way, good luck.
