Update: Max vs. A4

Ok, so we finally raced.
I have a 97 SE 5-speed with only a generic cone filter for performance mods. He has a 96 A4 1.8T 5-speed with exhaust, APR ECU upgrade and he said he was running 14psi. Well he had me beat. He pulled hard off the line and got like 3-4 cars on me then every time we would run up to about 110 and he would have like 2-3 cars. He had me on the launch every time(damn quatro), but the faster we went the closer I got.
The last time we ran he had his GF and roomate and I had my friend and I was at his rear bumper the whole time.
I'm not surprised that he won, but now I have to get a y-pipe and a few other mods so I can win.

I am positive I would have beat him stock. He did not tell me when we were racing, but after words he said that he could put it back in stock mode with the push of a button.
I would have liked to have raced him in stock mode.

I mean push button ECU mode selector. I kinda figured that everone would get the point. Those ECU upgrades allow you to control different modes. He said you have stock mode, performance mode, "race fuel" mode?, and valet mode(the engine only puts out 65HP).

Yup, with a flick of the cruise control stalk, you can flip between any of the ECU modes that you've bought and downloaded to the ECU. Pretty cool stuff, this drive-by-wire technology.

A4s are only worth a damn if you mod them to hell, and they are so much more expensive to mod, the only A4 I like isnt really an A4- the S4

My friend drives a 2001 A4 1.8T with a chip, intake, exhaust, and even though he always gets perfect launches (AWD) I catch up to him and pass him in 2-3rd gear

Carnal,
What mods do you have? It seems like your friend has the same mods as the guy I raced(only a newer model), but I can't catch him till like 125mph.
We have the same car except I have the SE (prolly heavier).

I did it bone stock one time on 15s (It was hard to launch perfectly but I sure did pull!) , maybe cuz he'z auto, but I dont know, cuz Audi's auto trannys really do perfect redline shifts

the only thing my friend doesnt have that your friend might is the 14Psi boost, I'm not sure whats stock on the A4 1.8T

I'm going in for a rematch again in February, I have Y-pipe exhaust, Cat, Cold Air Intake, Catback

My advice is from my experience (sure you know it too) is that you BETTER get a great launch, thats where they shoot ahead first and then its hard to catch up, also dont redline all your shifts, in our higher gears we bog down and we waste alota time... do a search, someone posted the EXACT rpms to shift at

good luck!

The older A4s only had about 180hp or so? With just a chip 1 bar, it hikes it up to about 200hp or so I believe. So the chip makes a big difference.

maybe my friend is a slow A4, I dont know the details of the chip and what PSI he's running, all I know he's ****ed that I can smoke him

get some mods, $250 Y-pipe from Warpspeed, Warpspeed CAI (they'll hook you up if you buy CAI,Cat,Y-pipe all together, plus they're working on a b-pipe for our cars.
and the Warspeed products are tight as hell plus they have great service

good luck, show them A4s where they belong! DOwn in the pits of 4cyl cars like Shietvics! (the 1.8T is nice, but it still sounds like crap compared to how our cars sound)

I think the company that makes this ECU upgrade is APR or ARP or something like that.

I don't think 3-4 car lengths is really getting dusted.. And I bet the A4 guy had his boost turned way up, which isnt very good for the reliability of the turbo.. I'm not saying its a slow car, but it can be expensive to mod, maintain, and fix..

Unfortunately, it is. It doesn't seem like that far off, but it takes a surprisingly long time to go that far (as far as 1/4 numbers are concerened).

Same engine, but don't do APR (despite their stalk mode changing). Giac is better and likely to be approved by VAG as an aftermarket supplier. A chip can bump you 10% (not hp) in power and torque.

Re: Update: Max vs. A4

i never thought VWs were any good, particularly the new ones until one of my teammates rolls into atco raceway with an automatic '01 jetta 1.8T. i think it is the same powerplant as the A4 because VW uses that engine in almost all their cars. this dude was hitting 14.2! i was baffled. that day i ran 14.3; he ran 13.9! imagine a 13 second 4 door with full interior. his mods were only a test pipe cat, free flow exhaust and a chip (how much HP is that?)! that day i thought about selling my car and getting a VW! i'm over it now. i'm convinced we too can hit 13s only ALL MOTOR. if not, then bring in the turbos! good luck to those hardworking R&D people on the org and if that doesn't work out, then hello S13 S14 conversion!

Bagh - don't waste your time on the mealy 1.8T - I got's me a 2.7T from Audi. A friend of mine has an Audi 1.8T A4 suped up and it was faster than a stock S4!! Despite your 'all motor', you've got to admit that the four banger 1.8 isn't that bad. Now the new 3.5 Altima - wooo weee!!!

You can pump out of a small amount of displacemnet now a days. Not bad when compared to the gas you will save from it either.
