Yes, stupid, I know.

My friend and I were working on the Max all day. Last thing we decided to do was add the rear window spoiler. Easy enough right?

Well a simple misunderstanding of "Yes, I'm aligned right on along 'it'" ended up ruining my install. And needless to say, because it's not centered.

So I looked around but I wanted to know from experience if any has had to remove this before? Or any 3M sticky tape? What's a safe product that'll work and do less damage to my paint if contacts or the window itself?

And I guess I'll have to scratch off all the old 3m tape and put a new strip on.

Heat is always adhesives worst enemy. I would try avoiding harsh chemicals. Use a hair dryer on high power and if you have one, a heat gun on the low power. Goo Gone is also a great product and is usually safe to use on clear coats.

 

Peel off the tape the best you can. Apply another piece of 3M tape over the left on residue and peel some more off. What is left can be taken off with Goof Off.

 

Heat gun or hair dryer and a razor blade should get it all off. Then use rubbing alcohol before applying the new tape.

I would stay away from Goof off. That stuff is really, really harsh. Goo Gone is a better choice, and if I'm not mistaken they have a goo gone special for car finishes.

the rubber eraser is what my boys body shop uses, safe for paint and takes just a couple minutes. i used it when i re-mounted my side skirts and it saved me hours.

 

I've got Goo Gone and I'll pick up the rubber attachment. That thing looks useful and only 15 bucks heck why not. Thanks for saving me some time.

I was looking into purchasing more 3M tape and found the foam stuff they attached to the spoiler before, comes pretty pricey.

Wondering if I really HAVE to use the foam? Or can I just use any 3M double sided tape?

 

I'm either lucky, or everybody who owns one of the rubber noodles from ebay should be warned that it's easier to remove than you might think. And could easily be removed from your car in a matter of minutes if somebody wanted to. No tools.

I just slowly peeled the spoiler up and everything came with it. Nothing stuck to the window, no residue left behind. Perfect...

It worked out then! Did you use the adhesive promoter that it came with?

 

Yeah I loaded that stuff between the two strips. My only concern now is that somebody else gets the idea of pealing the thing off while it's parked somewhere. Never know with people these days.
