2000 Maxima GLE Intermittent Engine Cut Out and Restart
2000 Maxima GLE Intermittent Engine Cut Out and Restart
All,
Appreciate help and guidance from the Maxima community. I have researched on the boards and performed suggested troubleshooting, but struggling to identify the issue after hours of research and investigation...
1) Vehicle and Background
-- 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE 127K miles
-- Codes O2 sensor code, goes on and off periodically since last year.
-- Recent work December 2013 - IAAC valve replaced, electric motor mounts disconnected, ECU IAAC circuit repaired. After relearn procedure, minor initial idle hesitation, but car has been running ok for last 7 months.
- Alternator replaced ~5 years ago.
- For the past few months, windshield wipers will sometimes stop mid windshield and require off and on to reset. Probably need a new motor, but including here for completeness.
2) Issue
-- Driving the car and stopped for dinner during major thunder and lightning rain storm. Upon return to car, turn key and just get clicks and buzzes. Lights in the car and dash very dim, flicker and sometimes go out completely with key in on position (engine off). If step on the brake with the key on (engine off), all lights go out including security light. Headlamp fuse on right side fender buzzing periodically. Dim lights returned after turning key on/off a bunch of times.
-- Jumped car and started without issue, was able to drive home short distance 1.5 miles, although interior lights appeared at less than normal strength.
-- Parked in driveway with car running, and turned additional devices on such as ac, brights, etc. -- this caused car to die immediately and would not re-start.
*** Next morning, car starts perfectly without doing anything.... hmm...???? where to go from here... Based on past board threads and recommendations, performed the following troubleshooting.
3) Troubleshooting and Findings
a. Have not driven the car since the issue and ongoing troubleshooting, but appears to start without issue (so far) in the driveway.
b. Fully tested battery and charging system with voltmeter. All checks out. Started car and tested on alternator power only (battery disconnected.) Alternator produces correct voltage.
c. Tested starter, trip wire with voltmeter, and also removed starter and had it bench tested. All checks out.
d. Removed crankshaft sensor on passenger side near harmonic balancer. A bit dirty, but tested resistance at 542.5 Ohms. Checks out within range.
e. Removed passenger side camshaft sensor, not chipped/damaged. Tested resistance at 2.376 KOhm. Checks out within range. Believe there is a 2nd camshaft sensor but have not been able to locate or check it yet. (location?)
f. Checked battery ground and terminals. Minor corrosion cleaned and re-connected.
g. No issues with fuses identified to this point..
4) Next Steps and Request for Help
a. Read much about grounding issues here, so have prepared 4 4AWG cables to add tomorrow from the member recommended locations.
b. Considered the ignition switch, but have no start issues currently in park or neutral.
c. A short seems possible, but not sure where to start. What would cause the car to die under load, get nothing on next attempt to start with fully charged battery - then restart sometime later? Could a periodically faulty alternator cause such a short? Could an issue with the ECU repair cause these symptoms?
Appreciate any help/guidance from the experts... If I have left out some key information, let me know and i will respond. Thanks again for any help guidance..
