Replacing the catback for the 3rd time should I buy the Walker SS muffler (21182) for $112 or their aluminzed steel muffler (18567) for $56 on ebay? Either or I'll coat it VHT exhaust ceramic primer (SP100) and VHT exhaust ceramic paint (SP117) that I have stocked.

Luckily the distributor I purchased from 5 years ago made an error and sent me a BOSAL B-pipe (BO286159) at no charge today. The 2 year warranty was expired but they sent me a free replacement

I'll also coat that new B-pipe and the SS warpspeed Y-pipe after dropping and sanding it.

Unless you like spending money or corrosion prone equipment...I see it as a no brainer! I like Dynomax mufflers (Walker) but their aluminized steel is worthless and seems to have about 2-3yrs service life and I'm in Texas. So I'm sure it's worse in the snow belt states. Even if you paint or ceramic coat the muffler they tend to corrode inside out! I went thru GOD knows 3-4 Dynomax SuperTurbo mufflers on my D21 p'up and installed a Magnaflow 6" round muffler 14 yrs ago and that baby is still alive and kicking!

 

Is that coated exhaust SS or aluminzed steel?

Coating an aluminzed catback IMO should keep it lasting longer than 5 years this time.

I had my MAX lowered for 8 years and raised it back up with the OEM springs last spring. I did that on account of all the rusted material I had to replace and then painted the entire MAX again. Raised 1.5" higher IMO will keep the exhaust and body from rusting as quick.

 

SS Walker, been running one for just over 5 years now. No rust.

 

I had thoughts of buying a Magnaflow or Kool Vue SS polished round muffler. Give me details on how you installed the Magnaflow? Did you clamp or weld it to the B-pipe? Did you need extended 2.25" exhaust tubing to reach the rear bumper? Did you have to weld on hangers?

You're right about corroding inside then out. The rear bottom section were the emissioned water collects is were it rusted. The drain hole is vertically below the tip and only drained water when I raised the front end first.

 

I decided on the Walker SS rear muffler (21182). I ordered it on www.autozone.com for $137 total. They offer a lifetime warranty on that specific muffler. That SS rear muffler will last longer than an aluminzed steel one.

When it arrives next week I'll sand, prime, and paint all the exhaust (excluding those OEM headers) and post pictures when it's complete.

 

Just the aluminized steel (low cost) version. The highway department normally uses sand instead of salt on icy roads so rust isn't usually a problem.
