I am running 215/55/16 on my 99 maxima so I need to get 2 tires in fair condition .. So I was looking at 215/65/16 to go on the rear and on the front 215/55/16 on the front .. So I was wondering about the the taller tires in the rear will work out? It will give a slight lean forward and the only reason because I am getting a good deal on them .. So any input would help thanks

 

as long as the drive wheels have the same size tires youre fine, you cant mix tire sizes on drive axles. how the larger sidewall will look i dont know

 

The sidewall height of the 215/65/16 is .84 inch higher than the 215/55/16 tire, 4.66 inch vs 5.5 inch.

The circumference of the 215/65/16 tire is 6.69% larger. If put on the front drive wheels, the speedometer will read slow, when showing 65 mph, you would be going 69.3 mph.

So if you have ABS your controller will see different wheel speeds and start cycling pumps and solenoids... So If the sound of that appeals to you, So you could do it and be in a ditch upside down. So maybe you should try it an let us know how it works out for you ....So.

 

ABS won't like that probably, not sure what sort of a mismatch ABS will allow before it starts freaking out but i bet that'd do it. that is a significant difference, and will look ridiculous. it would technically "work" if you don't care about any of that. terrible idea though imho.

 

I question the ABS thing. If that were true, why doesn't the ABS go berserk when you have the little donut spare tire on the car? I think the main purpose of ABS is to prevent the wheels from locking up during braking, not match rotational speed.

 

dont think ABS would care really, how many cars like Z/G35 have wider wheels on the rear anyways

 

Well had it done today and 2 tires at 215/65/16 in the rear and 2 tires at front are 215/55/16 the car drives awesome .. Like old school race car look and no problems at and the car feels stable .. Thanks for all the inputs

 

ABS will indeed set a code and disable itself. Used to happen all the time at NJ inspection back in the day when they actually tested the vehicles emissions on the rollers.
If your 99 has traction control like mine did, you'll get TCS and ABS lights on.

I would think that this would due to the traction control, not ABS.

 

tons of them do, but it has nothing to do with width at all. detecting unexpected wheel speeds is the entire premise on which traction control systems work. maybe this difference isn't enough to cause a problem, but if you go extreme enough, it most certainly will cause a problem. also would likely have to do with how sophisticated the system is/how small the programmed tolerances are. our old ABS/TCS system might not be affected by this difference. i figured it would but that's why i put the caveat that i didn't know what the mismatch tolerances programmed in to the 4th gen is. i do know the mismatch tolerances of the trucks my company produces are programmed to accept, and it's on the order of 5.5% for the Bendix system we option, and it's 5% for the other system (name of which I'm forgetting right now). beyond that, you're going to start throwing BCM codes and having issues.

My ABS light has been on for almost 3 years. I have no rotational problems when exceeding speeds of 100+. good luck op!
