Perhaps I'm just too **** but the mess made when removing our oil filter drives me nuts.

I can't help but do a motor wash-down after every oil change.

I've tried several options to try to avoid the messy motor from aluminum foil to Glad Press And Seal to painters tape ... no joy.

Have any of you guys devised some sort of guard or found some technique to keep oil filter run-off off your motor?

I put mine up on jack stands. I drain the oil, then do the filter. I turn the filter quickly to limit leakage.

I use a paper towel to clean up.

How do you change your filter?

How about punching a small hole in the filter and letting the oil drain out of it after draining the engine?

The A32B looks like a hospital room post oil change compared to a 3rd gen Honda Odyssey which looks like a midtown crime scene on a Saturday nite. That thing is horrible.

How are you removing it?

Drain oil, unscrew the filter a bit until the oil starts draining. Do not take it off completely until it slows down.

You should remove and tip the filter as rapidly as possible. Tip it so that the hole is facing up of course.

Loosening the filter, then sitting there while it caps all over the place is the reason you have a mess.

There is no oil in that area except what's in the filter.

You can drain the filter into your drain pan after it is removed.

After the filter is off, spray the mess area off with brake kleen or MAF cleaner.

... the crux of this question truly appears to have been missed.

Seems like your best answer Sr. OCD.

Me? Yolo, spin dat bish off as fast as possible.

BTW, your oil pan and oil filter are not connected unless the motor is running.

You can remove your oil filter and still have a good 4+ quarts of oil in your motor.

Agreed ... and the only response that really seems to attempt to address the question.

OCD is likely correct too. This is one of those quite simple tasks that I make much more of a hassle that it needs to be but keeping things tidy is something I just can't not do.
