Hello everyone, just the other day while driving my car had the check engine light randomly come on so I swung by Autozone. Upon arrival I had the service guy at Autozone scan my car for codes and it sprung the Evap Code. So I bought a new gas cap and the check engine light disappeared but came on again. Now the problem I'm having is while filling up my tank I can see droplets of gas leaking from hose leading to the filler neck. Is it best replace the fuel filler neck or could this be something else?

 

Looks like you found the reason the cel was on. The hose was leaking, not the gas cap.

 

If the fuel filler neck is not leaking, I would not replace it. Check it real good that it is not corroding from all the road salt.

 

I gave it a check by looking underneath the car, and it appears to have rust from all this New England salty weather. Now my question is how should I go about replacing it? Is it a dealer only part?

Order one from a junkyard down south where we don't use salt on the roads.

 

I've never changed one, but it looks like a real pita. I would try sanding it down and coating it with fiberglass epoxy.

 

The problem is if I seal it I think the check engine light still wouldn't clear. So best bet is a junkyard like you guys are recommending.

 

As long as you stop the air leak, you can clear the code, even if you use chewing gum.

Do whatever makes you feel the most comfortable.

 

I patched mine with a section of fuel safe hose. The assembly come out fairly easily, then just cut out the rotten section and replace it with fuel safe hose. If I remember correctly, I went to a diesel truck repair center to get the correct size fuel hose.

 

My filler tube is rusted away so I searched a local JY here in Western MA last Saturday. The first four A32s I checked had heavily rusted tubes just like mine. The last maxima I checked had this fairly new filler tube




I paid only $20 for that tube and $25 for a trunk lid.

When my fuel tank gets down to 1/4 I'll install that filler tube. It's almost new but I'll coat it anyways to last the life of my 1998 maxima.

When installing that tube the upper grommet has to be seated so it lines on the outer edge of the quarter panel. The rain getting behind the gas lid will drip into the left quarter panel if the grommet isn't seated on the outer edge. I'm speaking from experience .

 

Looks like it's in good shape! I hope I get lucky like you and find one. Auto zone wants $115 for an aftermarket fuel filler neck. �� Lol Damn I would have never guessed that this type of thing would get rusted on a car. Salt and moisture are like cancer to cars.

No. 95 through 98 used one design, 99 used another. The 5th gen was different from the 4th gen and used 3 different ones.
