97 Nissan Maxima leaking sunroof

Hello everyone!

I've had my maxima since 2009 and I never used the sunroof because the motor was going out. Well, the other day I bumped the button for it and then, like an idiot, I decided to wash the car. I didn't even think about the sunroof opening some until the water started dripping. Blah! I took it to my mechanic and he said it is shot...he thought he got it closed but after 2 days of heavy rain I've got a waterline around the sunroof/headliner. I also have a mucky wet looking area by the tip of the drivers side door in the headliner. I don't have the money or time to start replacing things. I'm wondering if anybody has sealed theirs with silicon or something? I would appreciate any tips or suggestions. I don't need it working I just don't want it to leak. Thanks!

NO!!, do not seal it up. If I can recall correctly, there is a way to shut it manually. Search or wait for members to chime in. I will look in my Haynes manual and see if there's any info I can give you

Ok...yea I'll wait for others to chime in. It's never leaked before...at least not bad enough to show on the headliner. My floorboards aren't getting wet though so maybe some of the drains are working. I'm afraid to open it to clean the drains because the motor is going out and I'm not sure I'll get it closed.

Okay so apparently if you take off a plastic panel near or on the sunroof switches, there is a manual override. You will need a larger hex bit. If it doesn't come down or slide back then you will need to rebuild it with a rebuild kit that should cost less than $50

Well hopefully you can use the screw method I'd not, here's a link for the sunroof servicing: http://www.vqpower.com/v3/content/sunroof-service-procedure

I've also read one members thread that said he forced it shut. Not a good idea but if you were to do this temporarily until you swapped in another youd be in the clear. I hope I don't run into this problem...

I never touch the sunroof anymore, If I want to use the sunroof I just open up the cover to see the window view.. last time It worked perfectly but I don't want that one moment where it just stops working when its open.

I only really use the feature that makes it slightly pop up. It's nice having a window to exhaust hot air in the winter to make cabin Temps just right. I never really slide it back though. Mine seems to be in good condition, but I'm sure it wears more sliding than popping up

The sunroof can be adjusted. Theres a cover on each side with i believe with either 2 10mm or 12mm bolts. Loosen them up and adjust as needed.

Thanks for the responses! i haven't gotten around to messing with it yet...luckily it hasn't rained!! lux97Max, where do you mean? Mine actually looks like it is tipped up a bit in the back and the front is a little lower than the roof. bumpypickle, how do I pop that cover off so I can try to manually close it? Thanks!
