Best place to sell a 97 GXE? Recent college grad needs your help!
Hi guys, first time I'm doing this so help a brother out :-P.
I got a 2014 S recently. Need to sell my current 97 GXE. About 186,500 miles on it. It's green.
- Engine/transmission in great shape
- Just got a. Ew alternator, new battery, and front valve cover gaskets replaced a year ago
- Rear main seal has been leaking oil for a few years, but nothing bad. Never had an issue as long as oil changes were done on time.
- Tachometer needle jumps around, the dial is broken, but engine runs fine
- Normal dents/scratches on the body, what you would expect from a 97.
- LED door, dome, and license plate lights
- stereo doesn't work
- all windows are tinted
- only major comfort issue is the air mix door motor is broken, so only hot air comes out. AC works great, but unfortunately it's stuck at hot air. I bought the replacement motor for $90 but no idea what I'm doing after I opened up the dash, so I'll probably put it back together lol. This would probably cost like $300 in labor to replace at the shop, so I'm gonna leave it as is
- all other internal electronics (power windows, side mirror adjust or, etc.) all work perfectly
- 2 sets of keys, but only one of them has the remote entry
Car is located in the DFW area - I would love recommendations on where you would recommend I sell it to get the highest value. Craigslist? And should I just leave the air mix door alone or pay to get it fixed? I feel like it will cost more to get it replaced than the reduction in the sale price of the car from not having it work.
Also, I tried to get a trade in value at the place where I got my 2014, and it was only $300-$700 depending on the condition. Even the sales guy who gave me that number said I should sell it privately because I could get a lot more since it's a functioning car.
Also, where can I get some of the green paint so I can do some touch up on the dents/scratches?
All help greatly appreciated!

The best place to sell would be the college bulletin board. The classified section here on the org, as someone else mentioned, might also work, and there's always CL.
A 20-year old car that's not a Honda, and with almost 200k, won't fetch much money. And trade-in values are always less than selling it yourself.
Does it have a valid inspection? Will it pass inspection?

I second the ebay suggestion! You won't get much, but should be able to get at least $1K. Automotivetouchup.com for the paint...
Also, you would get more money by fixing the air mix motor problem yourself. That happened to my '97 i30 last year, but it was stuck on cold air all of the time. I replaced the motor, and the job was a pain, but a mini ratcheting screwdriver from Harbor Freight made the job much easier! BTW...there is no need to open up the dash on the repair, you can access everything on the driver's side and passenger side floor and behind the middle console. I know there is not much room, but the mini ratcheting screwdriver makes changing out the motor possible if you are willing to lay down upside down to fix! Hope this helps!

Say what! So it is possible to replace it like that? Hmmm....because the other thread I started about this claimed that the only way to get there was to remove the center console dash, the lower air cowl, and then the ECU.
Did you take out the glove box?
Also, I'd be happy with anything in the $1,000 to $1,500 range. All the internal electronics (power windows, etc.) all work, driver's side motor seat adjustment works, transmission/engine all in good shape (minus the rear main seal leaking but that's whatever haha).

In order to fix the air mix motor, I didn't remove the glove box, but I remember having to unplug and move the ECU and adjust ECU harness. The wiring harness was the big PITA to get around, and space is tight. Once you squeeze in and get access, us a right angle ratcheting screwdriver to remove and remount the air mix motor. What do I need to get for the paint aside from the base coat color? I have to also buy the clear coat, correct? Should I bother with a primer? I'm trying to keep costs minimized since it's an old car that I'm trying to sell lol
