Should I replace CVT oil for the first time at 92k miles?

I went to replace my CVT oil with Amsoil at the dealer but the service manager recommended not to replace the oil now, since it had not been changed before. The reason was that the sediments in the tranny could get stirred up and cause issues after the oil is replaced. The car has 92,000 miles.

Thoughts on what you guys think I should do?

P.s car is out obviously out of warranty and no extended warranty. Car runs great, no issues with the CVT.

I would. Its not like a regular auto where a fluid change is damaging. Anyone else have info on this?

The fluid is supposed to last "100k" they say. I would change it. Service manager doesn't know much about cars they are more like salesman than mechanics. For automatics it's known not to change it he's probably basing his recommendation on that history. Use the nissan fluid. Also the car is suppose to indicate when the fluid needs changing and you're not experiencing any issues... I would change it.

I changed the fluid on a slipping (chevy) tranny at a goodyear and it locked up the same week. Change the filter at this point too.

I would drain and fill as well.
Then continue to do it at regular intervals.

Man change the fluid. IMO 92k miles is 42k miles too long. I went to the dealer at 50k miles for a service and they told me it was good until 100k too. I looked at it and didn't like the color or smell so I had them give me a written estimate. It would have cost me over $300 to have them do it. I used the estimate and bought my fluid on ebay and changed it myself for $120 dollars. I did it again at 100k miles and if I keep this car I plan on changing it every 50k miles. It's cheap insurance if you ask me, drain and fill.

I do this and I had no experience working on cars. Now I can do this without any problem. Think of it this way...this is your baby and no one in this world will treat it better than you do. 92k is a good time to change if its not your daily driver. I change my every 30k (I drive 26k miles a year in Texas)

Drain and fill will take 1 hour max

I would change it if I were you. I did mine at around 30000, and the car does quite a bit of city driving as well. The CVT fluid was relatively dark comparing to new fluid.

Now this is a bit scary! Our 2009 SV Premium has only 12,000 kilometres on it (garaged every winter) and my service manager has told me twice that the CVT fluid should never be changed! Might be time to change dealers. They do nice work on our 2008 Pathfinder though.

Drain and fill. The service writer is thinking of flushing a tranny which can cause issues with conventional trannies, not sure with the CVT. Either way provided its drained and filled your fine.

Drain / refill. Definitely recommended well before 92K miles. Nissan is a total goof when it comes to tranny fluid change on the CVT. This illusive CVT fluid deterioration value the transmission stores - pft! It certainly won't hurt anything to get rid of that nasty crap inside the transmission and replace with fresh fluid.

Don't forget the transmission filter - Nissan calls it a "transmission fluid cooler filter".

I was quoted $220 for a drain and fill by a dealership near me. Is that a good rate?

I changed mine at 30K and will change it at every 30K. It is easier to do than an oil change. At $18/qt, $90 every 30K is good insurance.

Transmission Issues

Looks like my transmission has bit the dust. Not sure if the CVT oil change screwed it up. Noticed the check engine light came on, and today as I was driving home the car wouldn't accelerate. Anybody know a good transmission shop in south florida?

Your original post indicated that you were going to use Amsoil. If you did a drain and fill the rest of the NS-2 oil that remained the the CVT was contaminated with the Amsoil. That could have been the cause of the failure. If you performed a flush the and got all the NS-2 out then you should have been OK.

@Richard66, actually I called up the Amsoil team and they told me that due the mileage and other factors that it would be okay to go with the factory oil which I did. With said, after doing some research last night I stumbled upon another thread on this forum that talks about a "limp mode" issue affecting the Max. I'm going to take the car in to the dealer later to diagnose the check engine light to see if the issue is with a sensor or the throttle body, and not a transmission failure.

I'll keep you guys posted.

limp mode is usually cam sensors and a or a crank sensor I know it sounds weird but it is how a cvt gets its info!

Was it the dealer that confirmed this? I wouldn't trust a tranny shop!

Did you change the fluid yourself, or let the dealer do it? Seems odd that it went out not too long afterwards.

I had the dealer change it. I was thinking the same thing about the failure happening only 8,000 miles after the change. I plan on bringing this up to the service manager when he returns to work tomorrow.

Thanks. Yes that was the total price. They also came back and offered an 'aftermarket' one for $2,400 total price.

I'll probably do the same after the replacement is done tomorrow.
