Do I need a new key???

I have an '03 maxima. I lost the original key and fob about a year ago and have been using the spare key that came with it ever since. Here recently, I have been getting codes p1614 and p1610. Everytime I get in my car, i have to turn the key and make sure the security light doesn't come on. If it stays off then the car will start but it it comes on, then i have to remove the key and try again. If i try and start it with the light on, it just cranks but won't start.
I just don't want to buy a new immobilizer if the key is the problem.
And if it is my key, what should I do? Call a locksmith? Or go to the dealership? I've never experienced this problem before. Please help!

If you were having a key problem, I don't think you would be getting the NATS P16xx codes. You may be having a problem with the NATS receiver in the steering column.

Do you have any other keys with chips in them that are on your key ring? Their RF signals could be interfering with the nissan key.

Local locksmiths can do the key programming stuff. They are cheaper than the dealer, but they all charge different prices. Call a couple for quotes.

However, wherever you want to do it, get yourself a extra key or two made. Because if something happens to your current and only key - you're in deep doo-doo.

Will it lock you out if detect no key, though? I think it throws those whenever you get locked out, too. I've set mine off before playing with keys.
I guess he can replace that 1st and see. Other keys on the ring is a good call.

Need to make more keys either way and NDS2 is the way to do it.

The NATS system goes into action when it does not detect the correct key and you try to start the car. I have cranked my car lots of times with a chipless key and it did not throw any P16xx codes, but I never did that enough times in a row to get locked out. Maybe in lockout you get a code, but I don't really know.

So I lean towards a bad NATS receiver if the op is getting a code because the way he explains it, it doesn't really sound like he is getting locked out. But maybe a weak signal from the key can generate a code.

Oh, pro tip: take your keys to be cut at small hardware stores. I've had several keys cut for free b/c they charge for the blanks. I even got home depot to do it once (against policy for them to cut chipped keys).

Take the chip from the other car key and put it in your key, then program it.

Here's the cheapo vag com cable drivers http://www.mediafire.com/?vm1xu2aaygpztrm I bypassed driver signature enforcement on them, so no need to enable test signing mode.

Spare key? I was given two set of running keys when I bought my 03 and also
another key called a maintenance key. With it you could lock your glove box and trunk
and turn over your running key to a mechanic and the glove box and trunk could not be opened. Is this the spare key u are talking about? I never tried to start the car with a maintenance key. Not even sure if it would fit in the ignition.
