Getting the axle seal in straight

My saga continues...

I am replacing both half shafts on my 99. I bought new axle seals.

I've replaced the axle seal on the driver's side, but it certainly did not go in straight. I've gently tapped the non-cooperative side in... but I can tell that the seal is skewed.

I could pull the seal and order... another... new one...

I haven't tapped the seal all the way back in its housing - there is an uneven gap between the back of the seal and the wall behind it.

I have a 36 MM socket that *almost* works... Looking for tips.

Just ordered a bearing race & seal installer kit which has diameters that *should* be good for this job... 2 more days... I'm hoping I can unscrew the seal by tapping it in the rest of the way. It's probably skewed by about fifteen degrees.

I bought a short piece of black iron pipe and cap from the hardware store that was the right diameter.

I like creativity at the right price!

But seating the Race really needs the right tool.

Good catch Keith. I removed my CV axle example.

I used 2" pvc pipe for the passenger side and just my hammer for the left side.

Hi Dennis,

My luck usually has a dark cloud when I try. I've been beaten up too often, and as a result, just go conservative!

I'm going to borrow some of your good luck next time if I may! Man, I seriously need it!

You didn't need to do that. I learned from that post! And I do respect creativity for sure. So many times, that's what actually gets the job done!

Finally got it in flush! Used the bottom of my breaker bar like a dowel and beat on the metal on the socket end. Worked like a charm. Now to get the axle in flush...
