Anyone have uneven tire wear?
Anyone have uneven tire wear?
I have a 2017 maxima Platinum with medallion package and I just brought my car in for a oil change and tire rotation and they told me all 4 tires have uneven tire wear. 4/32 inner and 6/32 outer.. they refused to rotate the tires and tell me I need 4 new tires. My tires only have 21k miles. I bring it in for oil changes every 5k and rotation 10k.. the alignment checks out fine.. and I believe they check the alignment every 5k.. never any problems...makes no sense...
they are Continental tires. The dealer said they would call continental and see what they can do...

Unless you paid for lifetime alignment and asked for it every time, then I guarantee no one has been checking your alignment every 5000 unless you asked them to, and had a plan that covered it, or paid for it at each visit.
More wear outside vs inside usually can be attributed to aggressive driving or an alignment issue, or both. To have more wear inside means the alignment isn't right, period. If the place you've been taking it to regularly that also refused to rotate now was responsible for the alignments, then you should raise hell with the manager based on the fact that their failure to fix your alignment resulted in uneven wear, and not a failure on you as the driver. You may still need new tires, but should get a deep discount based on that.

Usually the dealer checks the alignment each time I bring it in for oil change.. but I would have to verify. Having said that they checked my alignment after this fiasco and only my right rear tire was out of spec by 1 degree.. (i think it was camber).. all the others were fine. So I doubt my car has been out of alignment this whole time and somehow corrected itself just recently.. even the service advisor agreed that 1 tire, 1 degree out of alignment would not cause all 4 tires to have uneven tire wear on the inside..
I think the inner wear is a result of nissan putting to much camber in the spec... to enhance handling. Then when the car is loaded with 4 passengers, it makes the camber worse.. and the inner wear worse..
and yes I was furious at the dealer... the advisor wants to contact Continental, but I dont think they are going to do anything and this issues will need to be raised with Nissan.
stay tuned as I will be pushing for 4 new tires for free or at a considerable reduction in cost..

You may be onto something here. Does anyone know Maxima alignment specs for say the SL versus SR? The reason this may make sense is that some sport suspensions are intentionally cambered outward in order to gain grip in cornering. As the car turns it places greater forces on the tire so that more of the tread is exposed to the pavement during spirited cornering. GM tweaked the camber on the C6 Corvette to achieve this greater cornering grip. The result for most of us that do not "track" our cars is that our tires wore out on the insides in as little at 10k miles. Yikes. Fortunately, I learned of this horror early and had my alignment specs all set to "zero" (camber and toe). Heck, at 27,000 miles on lousy Goodyear tires I have even tread wear all the way across (my Max is the same at 22,000 miles, and with the Vette there is no way to even rotate those beastie tires because they are uni-directional and the fronts are smaller width than the rears. You live with what you've got. PS- I religiously rotate all my rotate'able tires every 5K miles and get great wear. But the SR?... would love to know if camber and toe specs are different as you surmise!
Mine is not an SR.. but still wonder if there is to much camber in factory specs... even under load.. I would say a majority of those miles are prob with 4 adults in the car exasborating the camber.. but still. That should be factored in..I'd like to know the alignment specs with the car having 800lbs of load inside
I guess I was furious at the dealer because they usually check the alignment every time I go in... thus if the car was really in alignment then how can I have such sevee inner tire wear.. so I was furious that they screwed up...
So either the dealer is full of crap and the tires are fine or slightly worn... but I have never heard of not rotating tires due to uneven camber wear...
something doesnt add up...

Nissan revised their alignment specs for the Maxima.
NTB17-040a -REVISED-
VARIOUS NISSAN MODELS; REVISED WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS
For the Applied Vehicles, some wheel alignment specifications listed in the Front Suspension (FSU) and Rear Suspension (RSU) sections of the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) have been revised.
May be something to look into.
