Maxima sounds just before crank.

My wife has a 2009 Maxima with about 140k miles on it. It has push button crank. Sometimes when she pushes the button to crank the engine, a sound is heard just before the engine cranks. It’s not loud and doesn’t sound too threatening, but I don’t know what it is. Any ideas what that sound is? The car doesn’t have any known issues.

Probably fuel pump priming. A small hum then the starter engages.

Or it is the spinning sound of the steering lock motor below the steering wheel, many "deleted" the fuse so the steering wheel does not lock.

I don’t know. If that is the problem, what is the worse case scenario?

You might want to find out from the dealership if the recall to remove this steering lock was ever performed. The worse case scenario if this fails, the car will refuse to crank over, part of the anti theft features.. There have been numerous members here that's experienced this. This recall is for 2009 and 2010 model years only as the steering lock was removed from later models.
