My exhaust sounds like crap when its cold
My exhaust sounds like crap when its cold
Since its been about 20-40 degrees outside lately, my exhaust sounds like crap when I first start up the car. I have a cattman SS Y, stock cat, stillen B and stock muffler. 2 points. 1 theres a metallic rattling sound that comes from the rear of the car. I'm assuming its the baffles in the muffler, and when it heats up, it situates itself better and shutsup. Number 2, I think theres a leak in the rear manifold between it and the Y pipe. I cant get my hand up there to feel for leaks cause the car gets too hot too quickly. I'll probbly try putting a flame up there to see if it blows around any. My guess is that crush gasket got unsituated during the install. Any ideas?
Eric-
It's funny you bring this up because I was noticing the same thing this winter. My exhaust sounds "harsh" for the first 20 minutes of operation until the system warms up completely. Most aftermarket exhaust compontents use thinner gauge metal which allows more noise to get thru. Once the exhaust warms up, the sound disapates a bit. My exhaust only seems to be louder and harsher once the temp drops below 40 degrees. Last week we had a rare 70 degree day and my exhaust was nice and quiet.

Re: My exhaust sounds like crap when its cold
Hello Eric,
I have the same problem. I recently installed a Stillen B pipe and an HKS muffler. The setup was too loud for my taste and went back to the the OEM muffler. When I had the HKS, I had no rattles and the system seemed ok (no leakedge sounds.) When I installed the OEM muffler I noticed the rattles and the leakedge sounds for the first few minutes until the exhaust warms up.
It turns out that there is a bracket that sits accros the sides that hosts the B pipe about the middle of the car (where the center rubber hanger is locted for the B pipe). The B pipe drops enough and rattles. Also when the system is cold the engine pulls/and pushes the exhaust forcing the pipe to go lower towards the bracket and make rattle with acceleration.
The thing is that at the joint, the position of the second part (the one that meets with the muffler) must be losen and rotated upwards to as much as possible (towards the car) before tightening the clamp. That way when the B pipe is all one peace, will sit considerably higher and not rattle agaist the bracket.
As for the leakedge sounds, you might have to install a new gasket which is one for a Ford Probe (which is the same that Stillen provides with the pipe) between the muffler and the pipe (I have noticed that the sound comes from there).
If you cannot make enough clearence with the bracket, then just remove it and you will get ride of the rattle.
Let me know how you make out.

No, no, no Craig boy you are wrong!
You dik-head,
It is 30- degrees up here (you can bring your @ss up north and feel the cold for your self).
The case is not for all exhausts (it is known that when cold the exhaust is rougher but not rattly against the body of the car!). This is specific to the Stillen B pipe which has a two peace config. and needs attention when installing it.
Sheesh back to you bro :|

C'mon Craig
Truthfuly,
All exhausts change behavior from cold to warm (that is a given). What we were talking about in this thread (aside from the other comments on cat back systems) is the fitment of the Stillen B pipe.
Newbee? I don't supposed you know the people from the times the forum was hosted by Jambo, TurzNite, Shing, and back to this site? I don't supposed you Anthony Citrano? How about the last episode of "As the bbs goes"

It's the exhaust that rattles, not the car ... if it were the car, I'd agree with you but in this case, NO! Go Nissan quality stock muffler!!!!

Well I'm bringin this back because its 70 degrees now and my exhaust still sounds like crap when I first start it up but only for the first 1/4 mile or so. It sounds fine at idle, but only when I'm accelerating. It started when I put my Y pipe back on last week. I checked around and there doesnt seem to be any contact with anything. Grrr.
Did you use all new crush gaskets, or re-use your old ones?
I dis-connected my Y pipe at the cat to check for suspect flex failure, didn't find any. Once I put everything back together, exhaust leak
I've got new Nissan crush gaskets for before and after the cat, but I'm waiting for my B pipe to arrive and then I'll install everything.

And if you think our cars sound bad, take a listen of a VW mark4 Jetta/Golf when it first starts up...it's so loud, you'd be likely to think that the muffler was missing.
