Purging fuel rail after injector rebuild?

99 max 5speed CA emissions

Hey guys,

Putting the max back together after:
- sending out the injectors to get rebuilt,
- changing knock sensor
- changing fuel press regulator
- cleaning egr pipe
- new clutch / flywheel
- rear main seal
- fuel filter
- vac hoses
- valve cover gaskets
- etc
- etc

Question, is there a procedure for purging / bleeding air out of the fuel rail? In the midst of all of the above, I took the fuel rail off & changed the rubber fuel hoses etc. Just wondering after it's all together is it neseccasry to purge the fuel injection rack? If so, how? Or does it self-purge and return fuel to the tank?

Thanks

No need to purge it, it's a return system. Put it together and check for leaks. It may take a bit longer to start the first time.

Thanks JSutter

I guess the real question is: How do I check for leaks on the injector rack once it's all together? Can't see it under the intake manifold.

Does the fuel pump run when the key is on? or only when cranking and then the fuel pump continues to run once it's started? Thats the way the MKIV volkswagen gassers are. Fuel pump only runs while cranking or running.

If for example the fuel pump runs while cranking, I could thoretically install the lower intake manifold, fuel rail and injectors but NOT the upper intake manifold....and then crank it to see if any leaks are happening on the fuel rail or injector seats etc. ? (coils unplugged of course ;o)

Thanks

I'm assuming that you put some engine oil on the injectors O rings so that they slipped in properly without tearing.

I'm also assumingthat you tightened the hose clamps reasonably firmly.

I turned the key to the on position, then off several times whIle not starting the engine.

Starting the engine might take a little while longer than normal.

A gasoline smell would indicate a leak.

Let us know how your car runs now.
