1997 5-speed bearing replace now won’t shift

Hello everyone, I just replaced diff bearings in my 5-speed (with help from this forum— thank you). I thought everything went fine, “seemed” to shift fine on the workbench, so just put everything back in the car and have problems. When shifter inside car is put in neutral, let out on clutch and axles turn, it’s not neutral! When slowly letting out on clutch in 1st, 3rd, 4th or 5th the motor will die. When I try 2nd, slowly let out on clutch I hear loud screech and immediate push clutch back in. Reverse seems to be normal and can idle in gear with axles turning (car on jack stands). What have I messed up? I never pulled the main or input shafts/gears, but did mess with them and the reverse setup while trying to get the diff pulled out? Can you put the detent ball/springs for 1/2 and 3/4 in incorrectly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
