New Tire Recommendations?
New Tire Recommendations?
Hey guys I'm trying to replace my tires for the first time on my Maxima. I previously had the Yokohama tires that came with the car originally and they were horrible! Too loud, not smooth, and were horrible at taking curves. I'm normally used to driving on Michelin tires when I had my TL and they were amazing so I'm thinking about going back to those. Any recommendations on which ones work best for the Maxima though?
Here you go. Read the tests and reviews of what size tire, and speed rating you need for your car.

I just replaced the Continental ProContact tx that came on my 2017 Platinum at 23,500 miles. Three of the tires were worn down to 2/32. I had them rotated every 7,500 and watched the pressure religiously. The dealer checked the alignment last year and the documentation they gave me showed it was spot on. However I went to a local tire shop and had it checked and it was out of alignment. Don't know if the misalignment caused the excessive wear but I know it didn't help. Although there is no mileage warranty on the tires that come on the car from the factory Continental did step up and give me a $89/per tire credit on the purchase of new Continental tires. I put on the Continental DWS 06 tires on, I had used them on my 7th generation Maxima and was pleased with them.
Wow, that's a pretty short lifetime on the OEM Continental tires! I have ~26k on mine and the dealer was desperate to try to get me to replace them with 6/32 left when I got my oil changed a couple of weeks ago.
In case it helps anyone, the 2019 Consumer Reports tire reviews are available here. Has anyone tried the General Tire G-MAX AS-05? It seems like a well-regarded tire for the price point.

I chucked out the OEM Continentals at 30k miles. They're made in my hometown (actually my brother used to work in the factory). I then installed Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+, which only lasted 24k miles. Costco is refunding 48% of the price, so I just ordered a new set of Michelin Premier A/S. Waiting on delivery, any moment now.

I will be lucky to get 24,000 out of mine. I am not a speed racer, and I admit I made a mistake purchasing this Michelin tire. I too will use the warranty, and purchase the Michelin Premier A/S.
I always laughed at people who bought these cause I figured they had to be garbage for how cheap they are. But man, all I hear and read are good things about them. I think I may actually give them a shot on the new rims I just ordered for my SL, can't really go wrong at under $400 for the set. That's the same price as ONE of the rear tires on my Camaro. lol

Don’t get me wrong. I honestly and truly just stumbled on the Nankangs. However, they’ve been one of the best tires I’ve run on my 20.75 year old, purchased new off the showroom floor, Maxima.
But, if you wanna continue paying $250-$300 for Michelin’s instead of $75-$105 for the Nankang, it’s your social security check.
... anyone but me remember when Bridgestone was a “who the F is that?” brand until they proved themselves in F1?

As an “old guy” myself, I say to you that, in my decades a auto ownership, maintenance, upkeep and restoration ... yes, I’ve frame-off restored 2 American muscle trucks ... I’m fed-the-fu**-up paying ungodly prices for parts and pieces that provide no additional benefit, performance or longevity than those costing far far less most notably, tires.

Your experience almost mirrors my experience. My wife got 32,000 on her OEM Continentals, I replaced my OEM Continentals at 26,000. I, like you, made the mistake of purchasing the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+. I have a little over 11,000 miles on them, rotate every 5K, and keep a close check on the air pressure, which I keep at 34 year round.
I will be lucky to get 24,000 out of mine. I am not a speed racer, and I admit I made a mistake purchasing this Michelin tire. I too will use the warranty, and purchase the Michelin Premier A/S.

Now, don't be put-off by these numbers. Michelin is a very good tire. It performs extremely well, but it wears out fast. So what do I care, as long as I'm only paying for what I got out of them? Yeah, you go through the hassle of replacing them every 2 years instead of every 4 years, but you only pay half the price, and you ride on newer tires. I'll stay with Michelin. Hope this makes sense.
All Michelin tires are warranted by the manufacturer, for a number of miles (45,000 in the case of the Pilot Sport). If you rotate them regularly at Costco (and they have the records) and they don't show signs of unusual wear, Costco will honor the warranty by giving you a refund/rebate on your next set, prorated to the number of miles the tires have been in use. So if the tires reached 2/32" at 24,000, Costco will refund (1 - 24/45) * (Price paid). I chose to apply this refund to the purchase of my next set of Michelin Premier (which have a 60,000 miles warranty).

2017 Maxima that came with OEM Continentals.
I’d prefer another set of Michelin’s and debating between the Pilot, Premier and Primacy MXM4. DT has the Primacy for 184.00 a tire but I think they’re discontinued and were replaced with the Premier. I just didn’t realize Costco would have a policy like that. That’s good to know as the Maxima is a pretty “spirited” vehicle.
I want the Pilot’s for the dry weather performance but the Premier for the wet weather and longevity/warranty. And the price difference between the two is about 50-60 per tire. So. I think it may end up being the Premier. But. Jury is still out. Thanks again for the info.
You're welcome. The warranty comes from Michelin, so all authorized distributors must follow it.

I now see it comes with other free goodies, like free roadside assistance for 3 years. Click on all the links and read the conditions.

Yes they have put 19 inch WHEELS (Not rims) on the 8th Gen Maxima. Big thing here is paying attention to the wheel offset. You could grab some stock 19s off EBAY along with the tires and the air sensors for reasonable money and there should be no recalibration of the speedo or sensors. I don't notice any ride degredation from my 16 with 18s vs my current 19 Platinum with 19s, If you go to a bigger/wider tire its best to search here for others experiences so you don't have clearance issues. Good luck
