Can't fill the tank easily
Can't fill the tank easily
we've got a 2000 SE that we can't fill the tank on basically.
in order to fill the tank we have to go EXTREMELY slowly or it backs up and shuts off the pump.
This started after the fuel tank fell out of the car and we fixed it. We put in a new sending unit and new plastic lines from the pump to the body. We reused the old filler neck and hoses.
Do these cars have a roll over check valve in the tank?
Any help is much appreciated as this car has to go on a 300+ mile trip in the not so distant future and it take 30 minutes to fill the tank.

was the fuel tank strap broke due to rusting? The only thing I think of why you are having a hard time filling it up has to be the rollover valve got stucked, possibly can be the evap line could been blocking it rather than being vented
I'm 90% sure it's your evap thats blocking the tank from filling up. A super easy quick fix (I'm talking less than 5 minutes here) is to go directly under your car where your gas cap is, and pull off the hose that connects to a box type thing. It's kinda hard for me to discribe without taking a picture because I dont have the car anymore, but its right under the car. Just yank it off and it'll work. The hose is about an inch in diameter.
Do you know where the rollover valve is, so I can check it?

are you referring to the vapor canister? Taking off a hose like that would trigger a check engine light, I would think.
My gas trips went from 20 minutes of *fill* *stop* *fill* *stop* to just 2 minutes of constant filling bliss after I yanked that hose off in my schools parking lot.
i had some interesting fuel fill ups when i had evap issues as well, i have a 2002 though i forgot if the evap systems are diff from 5th gen to 5.5 gen
my issues wasn' t with the actually filling part though but right after filling up my car wouldn't start up literally at the pump, it would take a few key turn overs and a throttle assist to turn over. it was caused by the evap.

There was a noticed sent out by Nissan I got for my 08 and 03 Maxima's about this very problem
when adding gas at the pump. The noticed was for the vent line off the canister may be pugged
and Nissan was offering to ck and fix that problem. Not sure how far in model years they
covered but my 03 got the notice. If tank is not venting, while adding fuel to the tank, creates a back pressure. Also the canister vent valve, with engine off, should be open to allow tank to
vent and closed while engine is running.
