Oil change - how often?!

HI,
As I have seen in your discussions you change oil (even Amsoil) every 5-8k miles. But I have an info from Amsoil that oil has to be changed every 12mth/62000k... Are they wrong? Do you have a reason to change it more frequent then manufacture recommends?
Thanks

I plan to use Valvoline 5W30. [I just got the car in Oct.] Maybe 3-5000 miles. I do a lot of short trips, so its probably getting dirty do so many warmups making it need to be changed more often.
Both the Haynes and the owners manual say to use 5W30, does 10W30 do any harm except making it harder to crank in cold weather?

short trips
well, for me to drive 5K would probably be 6-8 months --in that span of time, most of the trips are about 3 miles round trip...and I am using mobil 1 synthetic...but I would say a good measure is twice a year (with what I am doing) which is far from being ****--and wouldn't cost an arm or leg.

Re: 5000 miles....
5k a year--that is something--so you change your oil once a year if you are using synthetic?

I put on 5K a year myself.

IT really depends where you live and the climate.
If you live in lets say NYC, where it gets cold and you do alot of city driving then i think 3k is good.
Other wise you could just go with 5k.
Personally, I am still searching for a Maxima SE but I currently change my oil every 3k miles in my 94 Caprice SS
(Police Pkg, impala clone w/lt1). I do this even though i live in the suburbs of Maryland and have all my miles on the hwy. All the guys i know that own Trans AMs, Z28s or Impalas do the same. Just my 2cents.
I think its a common consesus that people belive 3-5 is good.
(i have no idea about synthetic...i never changed to synthetic since I was told that once you start you can never go back to reg)

False... if you use true synthetics such as Mobile 1, I have documented lab reports that I did myself that proves at 7500 miles, the oil is still fine. See my sig. And even if you use regular oil, if you look carefully in your owners manual, 7500 is in there as a "normal" driving condition... but I think you are right in that with dino oil, 5000 is probably the most I'd go with.

I really trust your test results! But - you have tested Mobil 'One'. Amsoil "recommends" to change it's oil - (depends on type) - some every 6 mth/30000km, some - every 12 mth/62000km. Amsoil's dealer recommended me to change 12mth/40000km, but this still is too far from 5-7000 for other brands. Have you tested other brands, and - (if yes) - have you seen much differences? It looks like Amsoil last longer then other brands. I do not drive a lot my Maxima (this is our second car), but I like it so much, and want use realy good oil. Mobil 1 and Amsoil (probably) are best, but I will switch to Amsoil as it needs less chahges without quality pooring... What do you think?
Thank in advance
Re: Re: Re: Where U live?
I used Mobile 1 synthetic 5W-30. Amsoil is a better oil... They even warranty your engine if you follow their directions... ie change filter ever x miles. So I would say that it would be fine.
BTW to clarify I use nissan OEM filters.

hmmm
ok 2 facts
1. oil breaks down (oxidation)
2. oil collects debris (water, dirt, metal shavings etc.
My personal habits
1. change oil every 5k (i use dino its clear mostly) its easy to remember. every 5 and 0 in the thousands =)
2. For whoever said they drove 5k in a year. your oil breaks down in time. i;d personally change 6 months. also if you have your motor sit too long. it will sieze. try to drive 15-20 min every other week...just my .02
then again the second doesn't affect me i drive ~40k year on the max...and to think the max isnt even the commuter!
