Oil drain bolt washer

I read the manual and it says a washer need to be replaced each time an oil change is done. But I never knew that. Last time I was changing oil I remember seeing there being a super thin copper washer on the bolt, is that it? I just left it and put it back. I never had any leaks from the bolt.

Which are the proper washers to buy for it? I saw store had different kinds, rubber, copper.

And would any damage happen if not using washer at all, or is the only drawback possible leaking from the bolt?

I've replaced exactly two of those washers in my life time.
I've maintained my own cars for 50 years.

FWIW ... I’ve (personally) always preferred the fiber washers over the copper.

Yeah I’ve been buying those 10 pack copper crush washers for awhile. Same as Nissan sells.

Just have to be watchful: it may seem like you’re overtightening, but the bolt will stop on its own. I’ve had a few times where there’s been a couple drops of oil leaking from the bolt from under tightening. Doesn’t require brut force, but a few turns past snug.
