Hi all, not sure if anyone has addressed this in a previous thread but would appreciate any insights/suggestions to help.
I have a 2017 Maxima SL (with a sunroof), and the rubber trim around my roof is melting on both sides. I live in a hot climate and unfortunately have to my car in a parking lot with little shade throughout the day. I've attached a few pictures as well.
I am not much help with this but it doesn't surprise me with the crappy quality of the Maxima. I can easily see my '20 having this issue in the future.
A few weeks ago I saw some sorta recall for the Maximas back window as the glue might come off so they would replace the window under recall.... However my cars vin was not on the recall... Even tho that's not the back window, maybe your car is under the recall and that part is covered? Most likely not but worth a shot.
I absolutely love the Maxima but Nissan builds horrible quality cars...they assemble them like crap.
I recently purchased a '17 Maxima and both of my roof panels were melted like this too. Negotiated getting them replaced as part of the deal and according to the invoice those were about $400/ea. I agree with @BlackNYMax above that, while sharp lookers and decent performing, the build quality isn't quite what I'd expect from a Japanese automaker. The best line I've heard is that Nissan is the Chrysler of Japan.
Time to cut off the crud, tape off the bad area, and apply black hi-temp silicone adhesive. You can actually smooth out wet silicone adhesive with some water and a butter knife or similar. The wet tool prevents the silicone from sticking to the tool.

I had the same problem this summer due to the extreme heat. J B weld plastic bonder worked very well. After mixed, I applied it and it created a hard protective outer shell on the trim. I them use model black paint to match the color. My only issue is i used the stick applicator JB weld provided so when you get up close it not smooth. I would recommend using a model paint brush.
I will take pics and upload

I’ve had a similar issue with the rubber trim around my roof melting on a car I used to own. I live in a pretty hot climate as well, and I found that the heat really took a toll on the trim over time. One thing I learned was that rubber compression molding can sometimes help with the durability of the trim, especially when exposed to harsh sunlight. I didn’t go that route initially, but after a few months of dealing with it, I started looking into options for more heat-resistant materials. For now, I’d suggest looking into a good quality trim repair kit or perhaps replacing the rubber with a more durable option.
