Serpentine belt jumps only when cold.

Thoughts on what causes this? New belt, tensioner and idler pulley.

From what I can see, it appears that either that is the wrong belt, or you didn't install it on all pulleys correctly or both. That jumping is it moving between ribs on the various ribbed devices (power steering, alternator, ac, etc) We all recommend the use of the OEM belt. The other aftermarkets just don't do as well and will slip, chirp and eventually rip themselves to pieces. But in the meantime, I would remove the belt, clean all the pulleys and then reinstall paying particular attention to the seating of the belt ribs to the pulleys. If it continues, you may have a bearing going out (the power steering pump has been known to start a death wobble before failure.) That

To your point of only doing, it when cold, the belt stretches as it warms up. What gets me is that I can't see the tensioner to see if it is moving around at all (it may be the angle but if it is jumping around like that, I would expect the tensioner to be bouncing around as well. Maybe a bad tensioner. Can you give us a view from the wheel well with the covers off?

New belt and test it’s installed correctly. New tensioner and idler pulley. As a matter of fact, it’s the 2nd new tensioner. I can’t show a clip with the wheel and cover off because I don’t have a lift. Even though I’m a mechanic by trade, im not doing the work. I’ll look closely at the power steering pulley.

Steve I just had the same thing happen with my car just this past December. I had replaced the idler pulley and put on a new Gates belt myself. I started my car one cold day and the 2 outside grooves shredded off. I took the car to my trusted shop, and they replaced the belt, the upper idler pulley and the tensioner assembly. My OE belt lasted for over 120k miles, when I started having tensioner and pulley issues, I went thru an additional 3 more belts in 60k miles before I finally got the job done right.

I'm dealing with this issue currently on my Murano 2013. I changed the tensioner, belt and all pulley, Alternator, and battery and that (BIP) thing keeps flopping in the morning when cold only. I just read all forums and I'm not sure a new belt from Nissan will do, but I will go this am and try. I'm also thinking the issue is maybe the AC compressor as the belt comes loose on the Alternator maybe because of restriction when the clutch of the AC engages.? I'm desperate as this issue lasts for 1 year ... Any help?

I currently have a 2010 Nissan Maxima with a knocking noise flapping belt on initial cold startup with the temperature being below 30°. Last for around a minute and slowly dissipate. I just installed upper and lower idler pulleys along with the tensioner. New belt was put on last year I believe Gates from Napa. I wonder if any of you guys have solved this dilemma that it seems like we all are experiencing any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Hey, I end up re-installing the Old Nissan Belt, Pulley and tensioner after I found out the Issue started with an Old AGM Battery capable of Starting but taking too much charge at the start. My lesson is to buy Nissan OEM tensioners and belts and never and AGM battery. That was the same Gates kits sold everywhere.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose I'll start with a OEM belt from Nissan. I don't have any of my old parts so hopefully that will work.

OEM belt from Nissan will solve the squealing problem at start-up. I went through a few different belts before finally going to Nissan and getting an OEM belt. The OEM went on and never squeaked since.

What actually fixed the belt throwing problem? You mention your trusted garage changed parts, what was initially causing the problem? Mark Switzer 403 328 6353

I fixed the issue with a OEM Nissan belt part number 11720-JA10B. Aftermarket belt don't seem to work well in the cold.

Well, I shredded another belt last week. Yes it was cold and I was still using an aftermarket belt. I called the dealer and got the OEM belt P/N 11720-JA10B and installed that.

Now, there was another issue. It seems a piece of the belt got lodged in the power steering pump and created another issue all together. Long story short…I replaced the PS pump and have not had any issues. Temps have been in the upper 20’s in the mornings and no belt jumping.

Damn aftermarket belts get people chasing their tails. For whatever reason aftermarket belts on the 7th gen maxima don't work in cold weather. Glad you got it figured out My car's been fine and I'm in single digit temperatures with negative wind chills.
