Want to buy exhaust parts

Hello all, first time posting here. My son and I recently ran into a problem with emissions testing on his '97 Maxima. The previous owner eliminated the two pre-cats that are in the Y-pipe that run from the headers to the rear cat. We've never had a problem passing emissions until now. I've tried all the wrecking yards and apparently it is illegal for them to sell catalytic converters or parts. Also, the EPA is cracking down and it no longer matters what the emissions really are anymore. My son and I are being told that none of the OEM emissions or exhaust components can be "tampered" with or it's an automatic fail before they even test the actual emissions and testing locations are now required to take and submit photographs of these components as part of the emissions test. Holy hell this is getting oppressive and ridiculous. I'm all for clean air, but good heavens these types of actions go well beyond enforcing a clean air standard. This happened a couple of months before we were planning to sell it so now we need to get these components from someone parting out a car or elsewhere. I haven't had much luck on eBay. Anyone here have a line on a 4th gen Y-pipe with the pre-cats?

Thank you for reading!

If you are sporting a Cali Spec Maxima......

Hottexhaust.com has the Cali spec Magnaflow Y-Pipe with the pre-cats built in and is a DIRECT fitted replacement and passes all states requirements. Probably even better than the original OEM.

But it is stupid money. $1190.00 They run sales often between 20 to 25% off.

Finding a used one from a private seller willing to ship, in good enough shape to reinstall and restore it to passing, will be a long time looking, it it happens at all!

Below is an expensive NEW option. Good Luck! I understand the pain.... I spent $1400 on parts alone for my 99 Cali for everything new from the exhaust manifolds back, a couple of years ago. But I'm keeping it.

Thank you for the helpful info! Wow, yeah, let's call that a last resort option if it comes right down to it. If that's what it's going to take, I may try to find a buyer that lives in a county that doesn't require emissions testing.

Thanks for the diagrams! Very helpful. It's Fed Spec. I have even less respect for Cali than I did before. The Cali spec appears overly and unnecessarily complicated. It also leaves the cat in the back completely ignored in terms of sensors? Weird.

Lucky YOU!

As far as the Cali Spec.......

Like Dr Smith said on the original Lost in Space series.... Oh The Pain! Especially if you live in California or NY and now NJ too.

There's a few Aftermarket companies that make decent stuff. AP Exhaust and their sister companies. Shop for best price AP 642680

Maybe this guy will be willing to remove the parts and ship them to you? You'll have to either install them yourself or go where there no laws against mechanics installing them.
