I changed my spark plugs last week and I noticed they had oil around the threads on the spark plugs. Is this normal? I also noticed that when I took the old ones out that a few of them were loose. I'm just hoping that I don't have bad seals or anything!

 

It is not normal or good. Sounds like bad head gaskets perhaps.

Well I think if it was the head Gasket I would have water in my oil right? I'm hoping that all that this is excess oil that was spilled some how. If not how hard is it to change these gaskets?

 

I have never changed them myself but you might wanna take a look in a Chiltons or Haynes manual. If you dont have one get one for this, it will probably come in handy.

Hey blackrob,

The plugs were still loose AFTER you tightened them in? I'm assuming you are refering to the new plugs being loose?

Is the car running smoothly? I was thinking you might have gotten the wrong plugs, but if it runs fine, it's not leaking through the plug threads.

And the oil on the plugs, were they on the new plugs or the old ones? You sure it's not anti-seize? Just trying to help.

 

No the old plugs that I took out were loose when I went to remove them. I torqued the new in pretty good not too much though.

 

Does it run good now then?

If it does, be HAPPY you changed your plugs

 

I have oil on my plugs too... It's coming from the head-cover-gasket. (I really don't think that's a real name though) but anyway...I've been thinking about replacing it but haven't gotten a chance. Check the plug hole....is there oil on the walls of that hole?

 

Yeh it still runs fine.
