Heavier brake dust on rear wheels?

Been having this issue for a while now, maybe someone can weigh in. 2012 max, replaced the pads and rotors about a year ago. Since then, I've noticed both rear wheels have heavy brake dust, to the point where the whole rim is noticably brown about a week after washing. The rear pads are ceramic pads, which to my understand are supposed to dust much less, but I'm getting the opposite affect.

Anyone experience this? Is this a possible issue with the caliper? I haven't noticed any issues with the brake performance otherwise. Thanks!

I had that on one wheel after repacing rotor and pads and shoes. I hadn't adjusted the parking brake shoe correctly on the offending wheel. Other than that, the rears do wear more rapidly than the fronts but not to the extent where brake dust was everywhere.

Hm I didn't touch the parking break, maybe that's the issue. I'll take a look. Thanks Lt!

1. What brand pads and rotors did you use?
2. We're the caliper guide pins cleaned/greased?
3. Was the caliper bracket cleaned of rust and and greased prior to installing pad abutments?

1. R1 Concepts rotors and ceramic pads
2. Yes, but I remember the guide pin on at least one of them had some caked-on dirt/grease that was hard to come off. Possibly corrosion. I sanded it smooth, but I'm thinking I should just replace it altogether. Greased the guide pins with silicone grease.
3. I was painting the calipers so they were brushed, sanded and cleaned with brake cleaner until they were completely clean and rust free as part of the paint prep.

3. Caliper brackets* not calipers.. if you live in an area where cars rust, you want to file down/wire brush/grind the caliper bracket right where the pads slide onto the bracket.

Not sure what you mean, both the calipers and caliper brackets were sanded and paint prepped. Cleaned & anti-seized the mating surfaces.

Hope you wasn’t given quasi ceramic (QC) pads which wear as bad as metallic. Double double check…. 🤔🧐🤔🧐🤔🧐

i have every scenario on my ‘11 w 310k miles, and yet to notice any rim dustier over the next rim / same lite dust - all full ceramics

now on my other car, ( that’s another chat session)
