This may be a crazy idea, but I'm thinking it may work, I need some help.
I have a 2019 Maxima. The rearview mirror did not come with the HomeLink buttons. It appears to be the very lowest-level mirror. Here is my crazy idea:
I have purchased another trunk release switch for under the left of the steering wheel and I think I can wire power to the handheld garage door opener that I have by piggybacking off the existing trunk release button that is there. My plan is to cut the wires to the existing trunk release switch and power the handheld garage door opener. Then connect the button of the garage door opener to the button on the new trunk release switch.
Will this work?
If so, I don't know wiring very well. There are 4 wires coming from the dash to the trunk release switch. (2 black, 1 red, 1 brown) I assume that the blacks are the hot, the red is neutral and brown is the ground. I could be wrong. I also am assuming that when the trunk release switch is pushed, it connects 2 of the wires and triggers the latch at the trunk.
If my theory is correct I should be able to activate a garage door opener in the same fashion as the trunk switch. (ex. push the button and the garage door opens)
In the attachment, you can see the actual plug that goes to the existing trunk release switch. 2 black wires all the way to the right, red wire to the left and brown right above and 1 pin to the right of the red.
What I don't know, if which is power + and power - (I assume black + and red -)
How would I connect these 4 wires to the board of the garage door opener?
The button in question is marked SW3 on the front of the control board. I have it labeled on the back as well.
I need someone's help for this one. I think it should be easy, but will have to combine wires I think.
Why not secure an updated factory mirror. with Home Link built in? As Jsutter points out, there could be a voltage issue to contend with with your plan..
Do you have any open switch slots where you are suggesting putting it. gentex (company that makes the home link mirrors) makes a battery operated one that clips into normal switch slot. I’ve used them on golf carts and some older cars where the mirror version wasn’t easy to install due to harness not being in roof.
Well I though about that, but I'm concerned that the wiring isn't sufficient. There are only 2 wires on the back of the factory mirror that's in there now. Will I need more wiring for an upgraded model?
