I changed my oil today and went for a little drive after. My car felt so much stronger then before that I'm kinda wondering if old oil made me dyno lower than I may have been able to (the oil when I did the dyno had 4000 miles on it). How much can an oil change help?

 

Well yeah you would think that changing your oil makes your car perform better than it was before.

 

Subjectively, for the first two weeks or so after I do an oil change it feels as if my max is significantly smoother, faster, and more quick to rev. Can't say if it is just a subjective thing or whether it really is though. It is a great feeling nonetheless... always look forward to oil change time!

Your car will be quicker with old dirty oil...
Because it's thinner and allows the moving parts to move quicker...

ok, now you and bill are making me look like a fool. I just feel that my car was able to rev more freely and it pulled harder. I was watching my oil pressure gauge and it was climbing much faster than usual

 

Yep, I gain more from changing my oil than I do from adding stickers.

Me too, you'd think having new, thin, non-sludge, non-mineral filled oil would improve throttle response and revability.

 

I notice the same thing every oil change - it's eve more pronounced now that I've got an oil cooler.

I say that in jest because I have never noticed any performance increase when changing oil. Zero. When I see these stories, I equate them to inaccurate butt dinos, using crappy oil the last time around, or illusion.

your butt dyno may not be as perceptive as the other people who've responded to this thread.

 

yeah I agree with you, in my dad's hon duh engine, changing oil can make a BIG difference in response/lag time(much more noticable than the maxima), the car feels peppier around town but when you smash the peddal it was just as fast as it was b4 oil change.

 

My car always feels more peppy after an oil change. Maybe its just in my head though.

 

Here's my take on an oil change:

1) with the oil change, your car runs much quieter and smoother. Because of that, we may percieve the car as being more powerful because it is making less noise at any given RPM. At 3000 rpm before the oil change, the car was making 75 db of noise. After, the noise went down to 72 db. The noise factor could what we're feeling.

2) When we change oil the filter is changed as well (that's how I always do it anyhow). With the new oil filter, your car's ability to circulate the oil improves. The oil pump doesn't have to work as hard to push the oil thru. So , for your guys with oil pressure gauges, that may be what you're seeing. My last car had an oil gauge and that's what I picked up.

i think thats all it is. Likeafter a mod how it seems like the most impressive change ever to happen to the car. But I think this is just somethign that we know was done so it makes us "feel" something new.

 

I'll bet if some little midget came into my garage while I was sleeping at night and changed my oil without me knowing...I wouldn't notice a damn thing Just the fact that you KNOW that you changed your oil can make you THINK that you have more power or throttle response.

 

I noticed the same thing (improved performance after oil change), but thought I was imagining things! Nice to know I'm not alone.

I just got it changed today, I didn't really notice a difference. My tires were spinning more than usuall when I floored it in first though, but that may have been because they had just filled them up.

All I am saying, is that I didn't really notice a difference, but there could have easily been one.

 

 

I dont know if its me being st00pid, but I changed to synthetic, and the engine sound and rev is mucchhhhhhhh smoother, it sounds new. Everything sounds like it's going smoother under the hood, but maybe thats just me.......

When I changed to synthetic, I noticed that too. Car revs much quicker than when it had dino oil. I'm pretty sure the power increased on that change, too.

Thats my theory.

Ive dynoed with conventional oil with 7500 miles on it and 0W-30 synthetic with 100 miles on it. They both put down the exact same amount of power.
