97 GLE vs 2001 GLE

Well a good friend of mine was house sitting for his parents. They were out of the county and left their rides behind, and their keys.

car a) 1997 maxima gle
car b) 2001 maxima gle

both autos

We was bored so we took em out and looked to get a little stoplight race on...

It was late, no cars out, damn lights kept on turning green for us before we could stop. Finally after searching for a long time, we caught one.

I'm in the 2001. Light turns green and I get a little quicker reaction than him. But I powerbraked and the tires spun for 2 or 3 seconds (surprised my ***) and he didnt.

So we go and our crazy V6 torque kicks in and we leave the guy in the old toyota king cab truck behind us and in confusion. So I start off with a car length on em. My MAD automatic tranny skillz keep that pedal to the metal the whole time!! But he starts to gain on me a little and he's at my back door at around 40. Then through 50 and 60 we are just going neck to neck. After 60 I start to creep away, but ever so slowly! We got up to 80 and I shut it down! He was just a little past my rear bumper!

Definately the closest race i've ever had, but i expected that. My conclusion was that the 2000 GLE had more top end power, more horsepower, and the 1997 had a little more torque, it had 97k miles on the clock so might have not been full powered.

By the way, what is the fastest of the 4th gens??

next time try to get an even start, a 4th gen auto should beat a 5th gen auto. all 4th gens are generally the same fastness(is that a word?) i think the 5spd 95 gxes are quickest from the factory. btw the 4th gen vs 5th gen is a sore subject round these parts.
