2k2 Maxima engine vs. 350z engine

I was at the Chicago Auto Show at took a look at the new 350Z.. From what they were saying it has the same 3.5 engine as the Maxima.. However they said that it is capable of over 280hp.. Is it simply a couple of differences in the computer, if so do you think that Nissan will release some sort of programming to increase the preformance of the 3.5 Maxima engine.. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK.. I am still new to this so take it easy.. PLEASE

I personally think it is more than just the ecu. Probably the intake and exhaust as well. To early to know right now....

Obviously there must be differences in the intake and exhaust manifolds and maybe the cams are slightly different, but if a lot of performance can be gained from reprogramming, I think Nissan could make some money selling a warrantied upgrade to 2k2 Maxima owners. That'll never happen.

There is no way

Nissan is going to let their 4door have the same HP as their sports car. Marketing thing...but also my opinion.

Would be nice to have that capability though....

I think I read (somewhere) that the Max has variable timing only on the intake whereas the Z has it on the exhaust as well.

...

It should be interesting to see what kind of aftermarket support the 350Z gets.

Hopefully, between NISMO and the aftermarket some of the parts will be similar enough to swap over to the 2K2.

From what I see on the engine, the maxima only has the timing control assemblies mounted on the intake cams.

is variable timing on the intake and exhaust not the same thing as the variable intake manifold and variable-capacity muffler?

Yes. Variable valve timing on the VQ35DE is not the same as the variable intake runner or muffler.

I believe Jeff is right - the VTC on the VQ35, at least on the Maxima, is only on the Intake valves and varies phase only and not lift.

The variable intake manifold and variable muffler are completely different things. VTC controls valve timing whereas the manifold controls the air supply before the valves and the variable exhaust varies backpressure after the exhaust valves all the way at the end of the exhaust system.

sorry...
although I know the difference between valve timing (phase/lift) and variable intake manifold/variable capacity exhaust, I was too stupid to realize that he was talking abotu the intake/exhaust valves (when he mentioned timing, it should have been obvious)...
