I caught it right away, I am sure that I started catching it as the revs came up, instead of down.

I was expecting my temp to go up, my oil pressure to go down and my pistons to go WAY up!

Makes perfect sense if you think about it ... I did the same thing once and made sure all my upshifts where clean and consise ... downshifted to 3rd instead of upshifting to 5th ... did so at 115mph!!! Again, I only did it for a mere fraction of a second. This was almost 2 years ago and here is what I have deducted as the reason for it happening.

First, it's a built in safety feature for the engine so that if it does happen and you catch it in time, the limiter isn't there to run the mixture lean (hard limiter = cuts gas and timing, soft limiter = cuts timing) ... lean mixture + 7K RPMS = instantly toasted engine. Second, this is a by-product of the way the limiter works in the first place. If you work your way up the RPM range and the engine management knows the engine RPM, it can decide where to cut off the gas and retard the timing. The ECU could just as easily be set up to cut fuel/timing at anything above xxxx RPMs, but it's designed to only cut increasing RPMs ... seams that when you shift, either things are reset or more likely, it sees that it's x gear and it knows that it's limit is xxxx and you are doing yyyy and something must be wrong, so don't cut the gas/timing.

The rev limiter only stops the engine from over-revving due to the engine's own operation. It can do absolutely nothing to prevent the engine from turning xxxx or even 1xxxx rpm if it is driven up there by the combination of road speed and engagement of the wrong gear. Actually it almost certainly did activate and bert just didn't notice it due to the sudden deceleration and the "OH $#!t" nature of the moment.

they got some kind of software where you can run the speedometer up without turning on the car. my roommates got a pic of his 4th gen doing the same thing. i was trying to figure out how someone would be able to take a steady shot at that speed, but now i know.

I drive an automatic, but I know that cant be good for your car. Get an apexi rsm. it will override your speed and rev limiters!

 

Heh... it's photoshopped... (unless you have some clever way to take a picture that good while GOING THAT FAST!) trust me, you're not the first person to point out the fact that it's in park... (+ some of the shadows, and the needle stop are off by a bit, but not enough to make it look bad)
