VTC Replacement Pricing

Thinking about having the VTC's replaced as opposed to grounded, just curious what I should expect to pay. I have heard prices as high as $3500 and as low as $1800, any thoughts appreciated.

Had mine done 2 years ago @ 76K miles dealer charged me $ 1,600 , I bought the car new so I *****ed to nissan, cuz It is a defective design that is the cause of the problem and they agreed to refund me half which they did. The good news I now religiouly change my oil every 3.5k use synthetics and at 122K the problem has not returned.

the parts are around $450 per side to replace. Labor will easily be that much per side also. so that puts you at $1800 right there. then if you factor in a dealer markup on everything, you can easily go over $3000.

Hey, Guys

I think I have the same problem
I have a 92 with 100miles.

How do I test this issue out?

Also do I have to fix this?
Or Can I just ground the VTC solenoid?

Would this cause any issue or performance loss?

Thanks
Dave

If I had known it wasn't harmful I would have lived with the noise

The chilton's manual shows how to test it. You hook up leader wires from the +/- terminals of the battery to the terminal of the VTC. This will engage/disengage the VTC. Check to see if the clicking sound changes. Before mine were replaced, I checked mine right at start up when it was clicking. When I applied the voltage it stopped the clicking, so I knew that the VTC's were making the noise.

It can be harmful in extreme cases. I've only heard of one or two happening ever, but some of them have caused the cam to lock and snap the timing chain.. then all hell breaks loose inside the engine and the pieces on the inside then become pieces on the outside...

Hey, Guys

Thanks for all the updates!!

So grounding the VTC would stop this clicking noise?
and stop anything bad from happening?

Do I loose HPs?
Is there any documentation on how to do this?

Again thanks Guys

Thanks for the info. Not sure when/If I'm goign to get them done but want to keep my eyes open for prices.

Also, is this something Nissan should do or is it ok for the local mechanic?
