How do wheels sitting in the garage "unbalance" themselves?

This past weekend I took off my stock rims and put my Monsoons on this car (they rock on a black car...pics someday soon). At any speed over 50 the car and steering wheel shook very bad.

I took the car to Firestone yesterday and had them balance the wheels and sure enough that fixed the problem.

Before I took them off for the winter they rode perfectly. Any reason the wheels would become unbalanced sitting in the attic of a garage for 4 months?

Maybe. It is my dad's garage..I never know what he keeps up there.

Oh, its not a heated garage or anything, so the wheels and tires saw the cold of winter. But they did last winter as well, without any problems.

Wheels don't need to be balanced differently for different cars, right? A balnced wheel on one car will be a balanced wheel on another.

If you have them standing when stored, they could get flat spots.

Nope, laying on their sides.

I'm stumped. Its not a problem really, just struck me as strange.

I guarantee you it wasn't a balancing issue. I have Monsoons also, they are a ***** to mount. Did you put your centering rings in place? I bet you didn't. The wheel probably wasnt' centered on the hub correctly. I've had the same thing happen to me. I took my wheels off to clean my calipers and the next thing I know I've got a shimmy. I'm like WTF? They were perfect 1 hour ago. I loosened up the nuts, and very carefully, by hand, evenly, tighten them up. Then a quick snug with a socket wrench, lower the car and torque them to 80 Ft lbs. Shimmy was gone, perfect ride again. I went right down to my wheel and tire guy and asked him what could have happened? He got me a set of centering rings, N/C and I've never had the problem again.

Interesting. I've had these wheels on 2 different cars now...and I take them off and put them back on all the time. I've never had problems with them before.

I guess that could be..although the tire place said that they were all out of wack, but who know, they could have been lying to me.
