bad bad noises from third gear
bad bad noises from third gear
I bought my 2000 SE 5 spd. with 11000 miles on it. Occasionally, even when not shifting fast, while attempting to go into third gear it would grind some. The problem didn't go away, and it wasn't a result of simply bad shifting. Well, three days ago while driving around town, no speed shifting or crazy stuff here, third gear grinded really hard twice in a row, it would not go in, so as soon as it began to grind, I held back, and tried again, and it happened again. On the third try it went in fine. Ever since then, third gear sounds very notchy while shifitng into it. It grinds a little bit about half of the time now. Is my tranny going to have to be replaced? I want to call it the synchronizers, or something like that, but I really don't know what to do. I'm scared to take into Nissan, because I imagine they will try to claim user abuse, and void my warranty or something like that. What should I do? Has anyone else had this problem? Can you replace only the synchronizers?(if thats even what theyre called) The car now has 22000 miles on it. PLEASE HELP!! Thanks guys,
Isaiah

I have had that happent to me in all gears
w/3rd being most common. The way I see it is a combo of lazy shifting on my part and subpar design on Nissans part. my car has 16k on it and it has gotten better. however, I am still going to switch to redline. I would bring it to Nissan if it is that bad! I would not take their crap if they give it too you! Sounds like something needs to be done!

Don't use any after-market transmission fluids, take it in to Nissan first. Get their reading on it. If it is defective, they will replace it unless they think you have screwed it up.

Heck... when I went to get my brakes serviced to the TSB, under warranty, the mechanic noted I had "body work" in front because he found overspray on the bottom splash shields. I figure they'd try to get out of the service 'cause they thought the car had been in an accident. I had to point out I had the front end repainted when I hit a bunch of small rocks on the freeway. He also noted my RSB; I didn't have the FSTB on yet!
And besides... if something is mechanicaly wrong, why put some magic super stuff in that could mask problems until after warranty expires? Get it checked... and fixed... first. And this case sounds bad enough, I'd fight it if the mechanic tries to say it's "normal".
Now, if your warrenty is already expired or voided... what's to loose?

I'm not trying to say, of itself, using any particular brand would put your warranty in jeapordy. It's just better to be safe than sorry when you think you might need to get your tranny replaced under warranty. If you have the problem, and you are running the fluid they put in, why change first?

But when Isaiah gets his tranny fixed, I'd suggest he switch to MT-90. It made a big difference in my tranny. And I'm not the only forum member that swears by it.

Yeah, I'm tracking with you, Buddy. If the situation is bad enough that Isaiah can't even shift into third, then his car should definitely go back to the dealer. I doubt any tranny fluid will fix that.
