Autodim Rear View Mirror

is there a way to set the mirror so that it stays off? everytime i get into the car at night i end up turning it off because i dont like the autodim feature. i like to see the road in my mirror and i cant do that with the autodim on. all i see is the headlights floating in midair. i tried holding down the off button or holding down the auto button but everytime i turn the car on its always on auto. is there a way to turn make it stay off?

Unless there is a fuse for the mirror there is no way to turn it off.I was thinking of maybe taking it apart and switching the wires so when the car is started it would turn off and you would have to use the off button to turn it on.Looks good on paper.

Re: Autodim Rear View Mirror

Try covering the autosensor located just to the left of the off switch. Stuff a little tissue in there to see if that solves your problem. If it does then a little black nail polish should do the trick permanently without the need to disassemble anything.

To see how it works: Next time you're out at night, cover the sensor (on the left of the button) with your finger and you'll see the dimming fade until it's back to normal. Now cut a very small square of black (opaque) electical tape and stick it over the sensor. That works for me... and you can take it off when you want for dimming. I'm going to try a piece of partially opaque material to see if there is some partial reduction in light hitting the sensor that gives me only a partial dimming instead of full dimming.

I agree with you. It's much too dim and unsafe. I judge other cars distance by brightness and it really throws my night awareness off to have if fully dimmed.

I haven't looked too hard at my 2k2 mirror, but the Gentek I put on my 2k has a plug right in the back. Take a look back there and see if you can pop it off. Failing that, check the fuse chart to see if it's possibly fused seperately. I thought I remember seeing "mirror", but that might have been the l&r power mirrors.

Hey Newman, what was the outcome on the rearview mirror auto dimmer experiment?

I got a loaner altima when my 2k2 was in the shop
I noticed the altima's auto mirror wasn't nearly as dark as the Max. It also had a purple tint that was much clearer than our green tint. It was the only thing I liked on that car.

I don't know if they are interchangable, but you might want to check it out. They also have that neat little compass feature for those of use that have no sense of direction

Yep, missed the 'stay off' portion of the question.

I actually like it. Anytime a 4X4 , Lifted gets behind me it doesnt bother me.. Or when you pass an old geezer at 90 MPH and he flashes his high beams at you !

I agree. It seems to keep the glare ( or lack of it ) constant, no matter who is behind me...

Works even better when you place some black electrical tape across the rear sensor.
