What's that smell?

Ok well, here is the problem. When I'm driving on the highway or at say 55 an hour and just give it gas hard, it smells like something is burning. It's a burnt rubber smell, but only when I give it gas hard. If I just coast to top speed no problem. What could it be, and no it's not my tires squeeling. Just got an oil change, and filter is brnad new. Thanks in advance.

maybe oil got spilled somewhere and burns? I dont know but my friend's exhaust manifold is leaking so everytime he gives it gas, exhause smokes out of the manifold.

Theres been quite a few threads sayng that when the Max is pushed hard, the Cat makes a funny smell.
And this is considered normal.

So a search, you might find something.

I was thinking the same thing, do you hear any sounds that might indicate a slipping belt?

A mechanic AT NISSAN told you you're belts DON'T need to be replaced!?!?!?

Who is this man, and why didn't Nissan fire him for being honest!?!?

I get a similar smell after pushing my max real hard, or after long trips. I'm positive mine is caused by the bad A/C Compressor on my car. The bearing went out a while ago and burned up the compressor.

If it smells like rotten eggs, its your catalytic converter.

Edit: I just saw he is from Maine too, so now I really gotta stick up for him

Roten egg smell can also be a clutch slipping. But what these guys are smelling is probably the cat...i don't have any smells when i push my car.

Burning rubber would be like a belt. Check them for missing teeth, wear, and play. When was the last time you changed them out?

I can't think of any other burning rubber smell that wouldn't be cause by rubber

If it's a sort of not rubber, but a burning like running hard, coming from the tranny area, then you might be a bit low on fluid since it happened and still sorta happens to his max still...

Is this happening with the window open or with the windows closed?

If its an in-cabin smell and smells like rubber, then its coming through the vents. Does your car lose coolant? Is the coolant fresh? prolly need to replace the coolant.

If the smell is coming from outside then it prolly is worn brakes. Im leaning away from burning oil or belts, because the oil leaks are usually on passenger side of the engine and belts on that side as well.

could jus need to clean your car

If the smell is similar to a NASTY burnt oil smell My guess would be to check the power steering pressure lines for taught-ness, they may leak under acceleration squirting directly onto the exhaust pipes I had a similar issue on my 95 max that was driving me NUTS until I thought to place the vehicle on ramps so vehicle weight is duplicated as if it were on the road. then with a Buddy had them turn the wheel and sure enough it made itself apparent. Only when the car is under load though go figure.
