Depending on your miles,

All of the routine maintenance. Filter changes, fluid changes, etc.

If you make lots of short trips (under 5 miles), you will get horrible mileage. Recently I've been doing a lot of city driving with all short trips. I got 15mpg.

Re: gas milage

clean out the throttle body, new fuel filter, maybe some fuel injector cleaner. 16 is very low - even at my lowest mileage with lots of city driving, i never get less then 20 mpg. Maybe you're leaking gas somewhere..

Miles driven divided by gallons of gas used.

Don't they teach math in school anymore?

My mileage

I have over 100K on my 95GLE and avg 25-26 mpg and I make a lot of short trips. My jaunt to work every day is a 5 mile stop and go trip. I guess this Max has been very well taken care of. I Guess? I know it has!

I was getting was low mpg for a while, then put in a new air filter for the stock box. mpg jumped back up, andi i'm getting 350-370 per tank now compared to the 270-300 before.

Looking at the setup on my newly acquired '97 SE Auto, the stock intake is a "cold air" setup as it takes in cool air instead of the air in the engine compartment. Studies show that a CAI setup is good for 7 HP for every 100 HP the motor puts out. Hot engine compartment air is a killer on HP.

BTW, I just put 1600 miles on the Max in one week. On both road trips, I pretty much cruised 85-90 mph (with a couple 100-110 blasts) and got 470 miles on one tank which took 16 gallons to fill. That puts it at 29.4 mpg. I run regular unleaded with a special additive that bumps octane several points and increases mileage. Got an extra 50 miles per tank in the Tahoe and it only gets 10 mpg. Stuff must work! Not a bad deal considering it's only $10 for a 12 oz. bottle and 1.5 ounces treats 18 gallons, so 8 tanks in the Maxima treated per bottle. That's .80 cents per tank which makes up for the .20/gal savings over super and increase mileage to boot. Oh, it's not sold in stores, either. I've read 28 mpg with an auto. Anyone else get almost 30 on hwy trips?

It's called Freedom fuel additive. The bottle has a cool resevior that meters how much you want to add in .5 ounce increments.

I live in So. Cali and I have an auto 95SE. I get like 20mpg in the city because I drive my car fairly hard and I race at too many stop lights. All I have is a K&N intake and my car reads 163,000 miles. I just went to Vegas and I got 32.5mpg. I was cruising like at 70mph with the AC on all the way. I did use Prolong's octane booster and I was very impressed.

I don't know how many miles you have on your Max, but bad oxygen sensors can result in a real rich fuel mixture.

Maybe someone here could comment on whether it results in an ECU code that the dealer could read out.

I could be wrong but fuel injector cleaner is not recommended for Nissans. I know for sure that on my 91 SE-R I had a TSB that prohibitted the use of injector cleaner. I drove the car over 100K and never had drivability issues with injectors.
