cuz i did it twice in a row. i need a shift lite, but till i get it, if i keep bumping the rev limiter, what real damage can be done? on a side note, i was beat real bad by a civic si. the si's exhaust was so loud, it actually hurt my ears with my windows up and my radio on. i could feel the sound waves all the way thru my body. it was rediculous.

There's nothing bad about bouncing off the rev limiter once or twice, you may lose a race or two but nothing to worry about ( Speaking of it, why were you "power shifting" anyways? )You lost to an Si, that's sad. Maybe it's because you were powershifting. Anyways I hope it was a BOV causing all that sound, because it if wasn't you shouldn't have lost badly. I just took one out tonight.

lol im a 5 speed, not an auto. but seriously, the sound coming from that car was rediculous. maybe he was spraying, i dunno, but i heard it and felt it. i get real nervous when i hit the limiter, cuz the whole car shakes and shudders, but if theres no harm then thats fine with me.

I don't think there's anything wrong

I've had my 5-speed Maxima for almost 5 years and just hit the rev limiter only two times...strangely both times were just last month. I have a UDP, light rotors, light wheels, and the exhaust mods. I didn't realize how fast my car jumps from 0-40 MPH. I had my head turned towards traffic and as I was turning right. I suddenly felt a tug and I realized I hit the rev limiter.

The rev limiter is throttle controlled, so it just prevents the car from revving all the way into the danger zone. If you downshift a gear and over-rev the car, the rev limited will not help you...ask eMax95. The same thing happened in my brother's BMW 3.28. My brother's shift bushing was cracked which made him hit 3rd gear instead of 5th at 70 MPH (on a very short-ratio tranny). My brother had about $1,200 of head and valve work done.

If our cars made power all the way to redline you could actually shift as you bump the rev limiter to start as high as possible in the next gear. However, due to our major torque drop off in the high end you're better off shifting considerably before redline anyway. Search for Dave B's posts and you'll see our optimal shift points fall around 6500, 6200, and 6000 for shifting to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively.

When you hit the limiter, what happens?

The ECU cuts fuel, right? Does it stop ignition? If not aren't you going to get a really lean condition for that instant? If you do that a good bit won't it start to damage the engine?
