I just replaced this and the old one was in real bad shape. It was black and nasty and looked horrible.

By replacing this,what dsifferences should I notice in gas mileage etc. The valve on the old one did not appear to even be working properly.

When looking at the throttle body the PCV valve will sit slightly to the left of it and to the right of the intake runners.

It was simple to replace, took about 15 minutes. You will need some long needle nose pliers and some lubricant to put the hose back on.

The PCV itself sits flush on top of the intake manifold. There is a piece of hose about four inches long conecting it to a metal tube which I believe refeeds gas fumes back into the injectors.

Get your self a Haynes or Chilton's manual and there is a picture in it. Also, if you do a search here you can find a How to.

A picture will show the exact location but, I do not have one.

It doesn't recirculate gas fumes to the injectors. PCV is Positive Crankcase Ventilation. During combustion, some of the burning/burned gases get past the piston rings and end up down the cylinder into the crankcase. This creates pressure inside the crankcase, plus it's not great for the oil. The PCV valve vents these gases back into the intake manifold. If the valve malfunctions, pressure builds up over time and finds another way out, usually a weak gasket, resulting in an oil leak around your oil pan or rear main seal.
