AARRGGHH!! I need some help! Problems with painting the body kit

AARRGGHH!! I need some help! Problems with painting the body kit

has anyone painted there body kit before? well, i am.. i have all the stuff needed. so far, i have spent $150 on paint prep , paint stick, clear coat and paint... the pain prep is used first.. the you spray on the paint stick stuff(this adhears to the euothane), well this stuff is not sticking well, it has runs, and kinda beads up... WTF!!!

you are not suppose to sand the kit, so what am i doing wrong????i got the supplies from a paint supplier, which does this all time, and he said this is what he would use to pain this.. grrrrr


any suggestions??

Hmm...

This is just a guess but instead of sanding (which as you said you are not supposed to do) have you tried used a paint stripper or acetone to remove and finish that is on the eurethane? If the paint is beading there is definitely something wrong with either your spray can or the finish of the product. Try spraying a little dab to another slick surface and see if it adheres. If it doesn't, when then you're bottle is the problem.

ok.. well.. it is working fine now..


i changed the the nozzle and varied the spray pattern..

it is working now...............


25 more minutes till i clear coat it... it is a dull red right now

If it's a Stillen body kit, the instructions call for scouring the pieces with a cleanser like Comet or Ajax and a Scotchbrite. The body shop who painted my pieces said it was to remove the "mold release agent" from the manufacturing process.

Brotha, did you clean the parts with dishwashing detergent. There is a film on it from when it was formed. Wash it then try to repaint.

the stuff i had to clean the body kit was some nasty stuff..

i had to use a resporatior.. and wear chemical gloves with..

believe me.. that stuff was clean when i started to paint it..


it is all shinny now....




i am installing it on wednesday..

Yeah, ummm, don't use paint stripper on the poly-ethelene kit lol. I used it on one spot on my front spoiler when I had to re-paint it, it does a nasty job. It kinda bubbles the kit a little and is a "biatch" to sand down. If you have to strip/sand it down, just use a DA sander at a body shop.

they replicated it for me..



i was one high **** yesterday.. paint fumes and all that other nice stuff..

I know this thread is old.. but i just got a body kit and I am in the same shoes..

Is the stuff you mentioned in the initial post everything you needed?


Also,
How did it come out in the end?

Were you happy with the overall job ?


just asking because i know you mentioned having your lip repainted.. so i figured you dont want to do it again yourself for a reason...

I was hoping it was in the range of that 150$ that Jeff mentioned initially.

I have not gotten any quotes yet, but I am thinking it will cost me at least twice that to get it painted by a shop.

Main reason I am considering this is the money savings so if I'm not saving anything then there is no point of messing with it.

Having a body shop paint the kit will cost around $300-500 depending on color. When my buddy painted mine, we ended up having to put a coat of primer on the kit first. There were all these little pinholes in the kit that would have caused little dots in the paint...something to keep an eye out for if doing it yourself.

BTW....that is what his shop would charge, not what i paid

Don't tell me the paint, primer and clear coat, or whatever else will run me over 200$...

i think i much rather paint it myself.. or at least try to..

Personally, i think it would be better to spend a few bucks more and have a body shop paint it that way you have a guarantee on it if it messes up.

The release agent found commonly in the kits can be extraced by heating them up and letting it "sweat" out the wipe it off with some grease remover.The release agent is a chemical that is used when the kit/bumper is made so it doesnt stick to the mold.

To prep the kit to be painted. use scothbrite, found at any auto paint supplier, and blend prep and go over the whole kit with it. You know when you have done it enough when the whole piece will have a dull look to it and no shiny parts. Wipe off with grease and wax remover, make sure you do not touch it after you have wiped it off or this defeats the purpose.
Then use sealer, then paint it.
Use 2-3 coats of paint.

** make sure you use the same amount of coats on all pieces**

upon doing further reasearch.. 300$ would actually be a very cheap price..

I didn't think it would even cost that much but oh well.

Also, i found out there is a lot of things that need to be considered when painting. Don't know how important they are, like pressure and temperature..


the kit is already painted pearl white,
i am going to get this paint off first..
maybe i can save some $ on at least installation.. which i am confident i can do myself
need to shop around on some quotes.

Yes, this correct. Pressure affects how much paint comes out and how smoothly it comes out. you dont want it running out of the gun and spoitting because not enough pressure. temp., well how fast it dries.. etc.

I found a place that can supply me with the materials needed..

they sell paint that they use for polyurethane for 30$ for every 12 oz. i believe. I think 24 oz will be enough..?

i just want to know all other things i may need..

also, where is redmaxpa007,
I just want to know if he was happy with his job

I say go two toned and dont paint the kit

Actually, when maximumsport had the sterling mist kit on his blue car, that looked tight!

I doubt green and white would look too good though.
