This IS OT. But to clarify for both of you. The term "import" and "domestic" is not really accurate. Most of the parts for both types of cars are sourced from various makers all over the world. The term Japanese can only be referenced as to where the $ spent on the car is going. ie.. for a car to be declared a domestic, it only must have xxx% of parts sourced in the USA. It's like 30-40% or so. So in reality, that Honda you think is an import might actually be coined domestic. Reason is "domestic" cars can avoid the import tax(thus one of the reason Honda set up shop to make some of their cars here)
So for the most part, this whole thread is moot.

The processes installed by the Japanese to make an automobile are superior over the processes installed by American automakers. Higher quality control, tighter inspections, and NO unions mean a better-assembled automobile!
Sorry I'm an idiot that wants everyone to explain stuff to me instead of researching on my own despite the fact that I've had my questions answered. Now I have no choice but to be berated by my domestic loving 2nd grade classmates.

I worked in a factory at Cummins Engine, Co. in Indiana honing fuel injectors for their Diesel applications. All i can say is that it was laid back over there. The work culture revolved around the employees schedule, their families schedule and as a consequence, the priority of the worker wasn't on the product they were making, but on being able to leave early, take vacation, get things done quickly etc.
My buddy worked over at a Japanese company down the road. He experienced the complete opposite. People would stay until 8:00 pm everyday and it was expected of you to come in on Saturday's. The work culture there puts priority on work, not family and vacations. And this working attitude and dedication to the company correlates to simply a better product.
my view on imports vs domestics...
First off im on the fence...meaning im not pro import and anti domestic nor pro domestic and anti import. I like both, just depends on the specific car/make. There are some imports better than domestics and vice versa. I like imports, not "imports"..."imports" being the riced out civics and all. Most 20 year olds and older despise imports because of that and they have their cool "muscle cars". Even some of my high school buds are anti import and some others have what they claim to be "american muscle cars" in which include: early 90s mustang with tinted headlight covers, 89 rusty t-bird, plain jane 90 buick riviera, 88 cutlass supreme, 90ish firebird with old purple faded tint...
I know i cant change their tastes but i stand up for the imports...I try to make them see the difference between an import and an "import" like "yea watch my car outlast yours in X amount of miles/years." Dont get me wrong i do love american cars but real american cars not POS 80s GM and Ford crap...im talking about 1-3rd gen vettes, 1st gen camaros, chargers, impalas, chevelles, 442s, etc. And i also favor the likes of Ferrari, BMW, Jaguar, Aston Martin, TVR. Its sorta like racism...youre either with the "american muscle car" crowd or the "ricey hooked up imports" crowd today.

What does "better" mean? This comes up in discussion alot. But better is such a loose term. What are we talking about here? Better at racing? Making fast? Reliability? Does even meaning it going faster make it better?
Heres my take on it: Japanese cars are expensive to make fast. They also are less prone to break down with every day "normal" use, but the repairs are expensive. The only "cheap speed" I see from a japanese car are the motorcycles.
Now if we're talking every day drivers, then yes I would consider a japanese car better then an american car. They generally get better gas mileage, break down less, have better resale and have better build quality. I can't speak for german cars as I've never worked with one closely.

I think its fairly obvious that Japanese cars are far more reliable than American cars are. This is well documented in magazines like consumer reports, etc.
I think the enhanced reliability comes from the Japanese system of manufacturing. They are far more efficient and meticulous than Americans in building their cars. This can be accreditted not entirely to the actual people who assemble the cars, but also to the people who design the actual process and floor layout for the assembly of the car.
You can drive a Nissan, Toyota or Honda 250,000 miles. You can also drive a Chevy, Dodge or Ford 250,000 miles, but on 2 new engines, 3 transmissions and numerous other new parts.

This to me is very simple. Just tell them to look in any Consumer Reports magazine and look at the reliability stats for all the cars. You'll clearly see that the American cars are unrelialible pieces of junk and the Japanese cars are very relialible. Also look at the Used Car section. Again most Japanese cars are recommended and most Americans are not. Then last tell them to count every car they see left dead on the side of the road. I'm willing to bet that the American cars will out number the Japanese 8 to 1. Simply put American cars suck.
It all depends on what you are looking for. I have owned both. If you gave me $10K, and wanted a fast 1/4 mile car, I would go buy an 89 Stang LX, 5 speed and have 6 grand for Mods, that would guarantee me high 11's...Thats is a GUARANTEE ! If you want all around performance, then I would go with the Maxx, which Is why I now own one. I had 2 of the fastest V8's made.. a 5.0, and an LT-1 , so I think I can be objective. Im almost 30, and more into luxury and all around performance, which is what my Maxx brings to the table, even though I envy those guys out there still RUMMBLING in the 5.0's with Mac Full Length Headers, 3" straight Pipes, that wake up the neighbors, by simply turning the car on !
Yeah

If you want to pick up trashy chicks in the trailer park go with a 5.0, if you want to pick up classy chicks at Church go with a Max
Japanese cars are better because UAW workers don't build them.
Besides the differences in work ethic that others have discussed, the Japanese have invented and implemented world-class quality control policies, procedures and manufacturing processes. Basically, America has been relearning how to build cars (and everything else) from the Japanese.

American cars suck b/c of corporate mentallity. For the american carmaker, it's all about the bottom line. Build the cheapest car you can and try to charge the greatest price. Buyers will come. That game has long been played out and t now the domestics are trying to build good quality cars.
What's really sad is that even if an American carmaker build a well built car, their reputation would have no-one relaize it for such a long time.

I have owned 3 cars in my life.
82 200SX - great car until my ex wrecked it while I was in Saudi. Bent the unibody. Time to go! The only thing I had die was the thermostat.
92 Setra E - bought it new in VA. 100,000 miles in Europe traded it in for "Max". The fuel pump was recalled and the MAF died.
98 Maxima GXE - bought it Sept 2000. That was 50,000 miles ago. I have not had ONE malfunction with it. I have 8 years until my son gets his drivers license. I plan on "Max" being his first car. HMMM....makes me wonder what kind of mods I wanna do.....HMMMM
My next car? 20xx Maxima SE.
What keeps me buying Nissans? Reliability. Economy. Simply stated - quality.
My brother is a Chevy lover. I cannot count the number of bowties he's had parked in the drive way. I keep telling him to buy a Nissan. I think he's deaf.
BTW - my girl has a Sunfire GT. Anyone know where I can get a good deal on an Altima SE?
