2002 Muffler

I have a 2002 SE 6 speed maxima. I have just installed a Steve Millen intake and I am very happy with the sound and the performance. I am now looking at adding a catback system. However, after reading the literature that came with my Maxima,I learned that the 2002 Maxima has a new muffler that closes a valve when accelerating normally, but opens up the valve when wide open. With this feature will a new muffler and catback exhaust really be much of an improvement. Help!

I added a RT cat and a cat-back exhaust. I did a before and after dyno, I got a 9.7 FWHP gain and 11 FWTQ gain. I think 90% of those gains can be contributed to the greddy exhaust.

Use the search function, Bill. Search under "muffler" in the 5th Gen forum and you'll find enough threads to choke a horse.

BTW, a complete catback system is worth ~5 HP.

Agreed. But not much more. Maybe ~7 HP instead of ~5 HP. But do a cost per horsepower comparison between a pre-fab catback system and a Y-pipe or an intake and the game is over. A pre-fab catback is simply the LEAST efficient mod you can make from a dollar per hp perspective. That's why it doesn't make sense to purchase a pre-fab catback in my estimation. Unless money is no object, you're much better off having one custom made.
