Just spent a week w/a 2K2 SE Auto (long)
So I head over to the AVIS counter in Birmingham, expecting my usual Grand Am, or Malibu, and much to my surprise, they hand me the keys to a 2K2 SE Auto (Majestic Blue) Max with 3000 miles on the clock - yeah, baby
My impressions after 7 days and almost 1000 miles:
This baby is quick - the motor pulls great, especially for the automagic. The transmission rarely searched for gears, and the shift pattern made it easy to manual shift.
The headlights are really nice - better visibility, much better when it's raining. They look cool, too - I can see why some of you have changed out the halogens on your 2000 and 2001 models.
In mixed driving I got 25.5 mpg - a full 1.5 mpg better than I average on my 2K2 5 spd. (this is the only time in 12 years of travel that I've ever put premium gas into a rental car - hmmm....wonder if the corporate accountants will notice??)
Alas, the tires are still the lousy RE-92's, so traction was marginal, especially in the rain. One other complaint is that the car really torque-steered - I haven't driven a car that pulled the wheel like this one since my 90 probe GT with the turbo - I can't imagine what it does in 6spd - dammit, Nissan needs to make this car rwd (or better yet, awd). Does the HLSD help reduce torque steer? Do the automagics have it?
Is it faster than our 2K2 TL-S? To be honest, I really couldn't tell - it'd have to be settled at the track - they felt pretty much the same in terms of quickness to my uncalibrated behind.
Final verdict: I'm jealous of you 2K2 drivers, and would march on over to my local Nissan dealer to try out the 6 spd - but the wife has already informed me that a new Max is not in the budget

I had one of those too...
..when I was in Fremont, CA. I got it from SFO Hertz. It was white pearl 2k2 SE with auto.
You were right on about the sedan, but one thing I notice that "needs improvement" other than the RE-92 (skidded off the I-20 Tioga Pass from Yosemite in pouring rain at 20mph, almost went to "the other side") is the seat.
I don't know about it, but I feel my 97 GXE seat is much better than the 2k2 seats.
Other than that, I wish the cool titanium dash could be "transplanted" to my 97 GXE....
Oh, my average MPG at that time was 22.3, and yes, I filled her up with 91 Chevron. And no, the accounting dept. did not say anything about my receipt...
